GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1998

Well that's fair enough. Any chance you've heard their album Alone? That's most likely going to be in the upper 5 of my 2006 list. Fucking fantastic album with a nice similar booming Adagio-style production, but musically probably a level below it in quality.
Only a couple of times. If it was the one released in '98 I'd probably have it in the mix, but a quick glance at what I've heard from 2006 says it'll be lucky to make 10th there.

Why has Legends of Evil and Eternal Death only made one list?! Beats out Sad Legend for melodic black metal for this year imo. Although both will probably make my list.

it's cool but the '99 EP's better imo. i haven't heard sad legend. my favourite BM from this year aside from aeturnus is probably forest, which is the closest i've heard to an album length version of the branikald tune i rave about, if not quite as good.

I’m not sure you’d like Sad Legend, it is almost too overly melodic to the point of being saccharine and melodramatic, but for the most part keeps itself reigned in enough. It also has some weird clean vocals.

Obviously that Aeternus is the best BM album of the year.

I gotta go back and edit this. This is taking way longer than I anticipated. I'll edit tomorrow and put them in order, add, and take out.

Dawn - Slaughtersun
Katatonia - Discouraged Ones
Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork
Inquisition - Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult
Solitude Aeturnus - Adagio
Barathum - Legions of Perkele ?
Skyforger - Kauja pie Saules
Amon Goeth - The Worship
The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph
Grave Digger - Knights of Cross
The Lord Weird Slough Feg- Twilight of the Idols
Nile - Amongst the Catacombs

Updated list!

1.Solitude Aeturnus - Adagio (Really amazing band. I love all the albums I've heard from them. Powerful, emotional, without being corny or overdone. Love this album).
2. Nile - Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (Yeah, pretty sure this is my favorite Nile album).
3. Katatonia - Discouraged Ones (This album holds a special place for me. There's very few albums, I feel, that just gets a specific feeling right through and through. This does it).
4. The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph (This is amazing. The Chasm really starts to develop their riff style in this album. Though the production always messes with me a bit, their musicianship always shines through).
5. Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork (I love this band. I like the Phantom Lodge better but this is still great).
6. Inquisition - Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult (Something about Inquisition's style that puts me in some sort of trance. Maybe it's the vocals? Sorta remind of throat singing. I'm not sure, but I remember hearing this for the first time and was so thoroughly impressed. Definitely an awesome debut by them).
7. Barathrum - Legions of Perkele (I just really love this band. They need reissues of their material already, damnit!)
8. Dawn - Slaughtersun
9. Aeternus - ...and So the Night Became (I actually needed to revisit this album. I remember it from years ago, and jeez what a trip down nostalgia lane. I didn't even think this would make my top ten list, but the this album just gets the timing down perfectly. Almost like it's in my head knowing what I want to hear next. Anyways, happy I revisited this).
10. Grave Digger - Knights of the Cross

i say this periodically but those who don't like the production on deathcult should check out the 2013 remaster.

i kinda like that katatonia album, mopefest though it is. don't really consider it metal though, it's just cure worship really.

Obviously that Aeternus is the best BM album of the year.

Not obvious at all. While it's a solid listen, I don't find it to be anything special.

I'd argue Nargaroth’s Herbstleyd is a legit classic, and moreover, one of the most underrated black metal albums of all time. A masterfully crafted concept album that flows from start to finish that is overlooked primarily because of what the band released afterward.

On the other hand, I've been revisiting Slaughtersun and I'm starting to see what the fuss is all about with this one. Definitely need to give it some more listens.

It is a good album to be sure, and considering my love of melodic BM you'd think I'd appreciate it more, but it just drags too much at times. It is one song shorter than their debut but 10 minutes longer.

Not that their debut is a shining example of concise songwriting or anything, but it isn't as excessive an album as Slaughtersun.

1. Inquisition - Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult
2. Slauter Xstroyes - Free the Beast
3. The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph
4. Aeternus - ...And So the Night Became
5. Solstice - New Dark Age
6. Mortem - The Devil Speaks in Tongues
7. Nifelheim - The Devil's Force
8. Aura Noir - Deep Tracts of Hell
9. Sad Legend - Sad Legend
10. Dawn - Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy)

I might change the order and bump off the two on the bottom, but that seems pretty solid for now.
