GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1998

I'll accept Jesus when he decides to man up and come back to fix this crappy world. He's the laziest savior that I've ever heard of.

5) ...And So the Night Became by Aeternus
The arc of the crescent moon casts a shadow over my soul...

R-4560666-1432557749-3397.jpeg.jpg

"Good compositions with an excellent sense of harmony and tension/atmosphere. I also like the folkish bits thrown in there. All in all, it's a very focused, cohesive and accomplished album." - @Cythraul

"Is it fair to consider Aeternus - ...and so the Night Became a classic? Everything about this album oozes with greatness. Folky, epic, and totally bonecrushing in every manner. It containss probably the best intro into a record I have ever had the pleasure to hear that contain some of the most grotesque vocals to ever thrown from ones throat. I can tell a lot of newer bands are influenced by them." - @Dazed and Brutal

"Yeah Aeternus have a tidal march to their music much like early Doomsword ...and So The Night Became, don't think i've heard a so called black metal album that sounds like that one, vital and giant!!" - @JontRevolting

"Aeternus is one of those bands I want to fall in love with, but I just can't seem to understand the brilliance of a record like ...And So the Night Became. I've heard it around three times now, taking special note to pay attention to nothing but the album to truly absorb it, but I still can't consider it an essential album." - @Addo_Of_Nex

"I generally like repetition in black metal so I was surprised when I didn't like that album." - @cookiecutter

"I'm gonna get flamed for this but I think Aeternus is just ok based on And so the Night Became... It is pretty epic but it does tend to bore me after a spell." - @dwellerINTHEdark

"Aeternus circa 1995-1998 are my favourite band of all time." - @Slayed Necros

4) Mercenary by Bolt Thrower
With the banner held high, let the chaos overrun!

a2328054740_10.jpg

"I'd say their best album is either Realm of Chaos or Mercenary.....my personal favourite being Mercenary by far." - @SculptedCold

"Woah, really? Mercenary over Realm of Chaos, For Victory, or The IVth Crusade?" - @Master_Yoda77

"Mercenary the weakest? Man...Id put Honor Valour Pride behind Mercenary any day.

Its funny, even though you can call one of their albums "the weakest" out of the bunch, its still solid. Their whole discography is awesome.
" - @KafkaX

"Heh I love Mercenary. No Guts, No glory is the first Bolt Thrower song I ever heard and one of the first death metal songs I ever heard. Looks bad ass on vinyl too." - @Krow

"such a crushing track! One of my favorites from them, but the rest of the album is comparatively weaker." - @TechnicalBarbarity

"Trying to decide which Bolt Thrower is best is like trying to decide which Italian dish is best. You think of a good one and then you remember 4 other good ones and then you just go "............" and shut down and explode.

For Victory is so fugging good though, but I always seem to get caught up in the Godliness of Realm Of Chaos and War Master. Then I remember that Mercenary has some of their finest riffs ever and it starts all over again!

A band I plan to track some stuff down from very soon.

i would definitely start with that one, as jont implied it's the closest thing they have to the kind of epic trad metal you enjoy, and it's just generally their most accessible i think. i like the debut just as much but it's more low key and hypnotic, i tend to think of ...AND SO THE NIGHT BECAME being the rousing battle and BEYOND THE WANDERING MOON being the warrior dying in the snow afterward with the ravens circling, more contemplative and bleak. after those two (and the EP which is also great) they started transitioning into generic death metal for some reason, although the third album SHADOWS OF OLD still has some gems on it.

10*) Adagio by Solitude Aeturnus
Looking forward I see the nothingness that approaches...

tumblr_o8ey8trKXU1se5m4zo1_1280.jpg

"a return to the smoother vocals and a more somber set of songs (not to mention an awesome cover of "Heaven and Hell")." - @St. Vitus

"I had the first two and Adagio at one time and enjoyed Adagio the most. Generally, I could not get into the band." - @The Ozzman

"Downfall & Adagio are their two worst." - @Krilons Resa

"Adagio is a fantastic album, one of their best. Not to play psychologist or anything, but I know they were really disappointed with how Downfall turned out which is probably why they felt the need to up their game on Adagio. Now I really like Downfall and have always been quick to defend it but Adagio knocks it out of the park in pretty much every department be it songwriting, riffs, vocals, production, ect... Some of their finest songs are to be found on it, Never, Mental Pictures, Insanity's Circles, Lament (really love Lowe's phrasing on that one), Spiral Descent." - @Oblivious Maximus

"it's the production of Adagio that gets my attention. Big doomy sound with clear vocals." - @Bloopy

"Well said man, Adagio has always been tied with Beyond the Crimson Horizon for my favourite Solitude Aeturnus album. Lately, and especially after this 1998 round, Adagio has been drifting closer to the top spot. It just gets everything right and then some." - @CASSETTEISGOD

3) The Supreme Force of Eternity by Runemagick
The truth in the darkness beyond...

cover_web.jpg

"I've been listening to it quite a bit over the last 3 months or so, and the more I listen to it, the more it's reinventing itself as one of my favourite albums. Up there with Miasma's "Changes" as a completely underrated album, it is totally crushing, yet disturbingly subtle in sound." - @byrne

"Took quite long for me to appricate The Supreme Force of Eternity because of my preconceived opinion after hearing alot of their newer albums. Then I realised that The Supreme Force is fucking awesome and much better." - @Vilden

"I think they were unfortunate in arriving very late on the scene. If they had released The Supreme Force of Eternity or Enter the Realm of Death in 1993, they would be regarded as legends. Personally I listen to those albums more than many comparable early 90s albums like say, Slumber of Sullen Eyes. Their stuff is not original but it is flawlessly executed." - @challenge_everything

"Agreed. There's a certain brilliance about The Supreme Force of Eternity that I can't quite put my finger on. It seems like simple death metal, but it has this dark, mystical atmosphere surrounding it which I can only attribute to Rudolfsson's time in bands like Sacramentum and early Swordmaster." - @Slayed Necros

"As much as I like The Supreme Force of Eternity, prefere Enter The Realm of Death and Resurrection in Blood." - @CF87

"This is definitely one of those overlooked AND underrated bands. Seriously top-notch death metal that gets little attention and that nobody seems to give a fuck about." - @Master_Yoda77
