GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1998

1. The Chasm - Deathcult For Eternity: The Triumph
2. Primordial - A Journey's End
3. Sorcier des Glaces - Snowland
4. Virgin Steele - Invictus
5. Runemagick - The Supreme Force of Eternity
6. Solstice - New Dark Age
7. Marduk - Nightwing
8. Appalling Spawn - Freedom Hope and Fury (The Second Spawn)
9. Devin Townsend - Infinity
10. Sad Legend - Sad Legend (really underated Korean BM)

HM to Absu's In the Eyes of Ioldánach for having their best song in Never Blow Out The Eastern Candle.
HM also to Covenant's Nexus Polaris for being one of my extreme metal gateway albums, even if I couldn't stomach listening to it nowadays.

The top three are pretty solidly in place with the remaining being a bit more uncertain. Great year with a lot of great stuff I'm likely missing from not having listened to in ages.

did you hear their album from last year? better than SNOWLAND imo

North has really stuck with me - it has extremely high peaks imo (tracks 1, 2, 5 and 6). One of the few more recent black metal albums that I’ve attached nostalgic feelings to. Doesn’t do anything new, but their mix of more primitive black metal with the more grandiose gives it a unique flavour.

Have you listened to Moonrise in Total Darkness?

HMs

Paysage d'Hiver - Schattengang (a "demo" is the only reason I didnt include this)
Desaster - Hellfire's Dominion
Buzzov*en - ...At a Loss

I think New Dark Age is overall a better album but Lamentations has songs that get stuck in my head for weeks and it was the first Solstice I heard so there's some nostalgia bias.

I've gotten into the habit of checking in advance that the albums I'm evaluating are actually from the right year.
