GMD Social Poll: Top Ten Films of 1981

Well, this particular category is going to be kind of weak for me. I had to go through 600 titles before I even found 6 movies that I am sure I watched. And I had to leave off some big name movies because I can't remember if I saw them or not.

So here's my paltry 6 movies (most of which aren't very good movies)

1. On Golden Pond
2. The Fox and the Hound
3. Private Lessons (Gawd Bless Sylvia Kristel)
4. Clash Of The Titans
5. Chariots Of Fire
6. The Incredible Shrinking Woman

Reactions: CiG
1. The Evil Dead (Sam Raimi)
2. Das Boot (Wolfgang Petersen)
3. Body Heat (Lawrence Kasdan)
4. Porky's (Bob Clark)
5. The Decline of Western Civilisation (Penelope Spheeris)
6. Southern Comfort (Walter Hill)
7. Scanners (David Cronenberg)
8. Thief (Michael Mann)
9. Possession (Andrzej Zulawski)
10. Raiders of the Lost Ark (Stephen Spielberg)

List gets a little thin at the end but I don't have much time to cram in viewing at the moment. Stuff like Possession I'm not a big fan of, it's fascinating but all a bit histrionic. I need to rewatch Blow Out but always recalled it as a lesser version of The Conversation, and Escape from New York never left much of an impression either, but it's been way too long since I've seen it. I've become more of a Carpenter fan with time so should probably give it another go. Still need to see Gallipoli, Ms 45, The Fan, and keen to see the Bogdanovich too as I've liked everything I've seen from him.

NSFW. Seriously dont open this if you're at work

Favourite Australian films of 1981:

1. Mad Max 2 (duh!)
2. Gallipoli
3. Roadgames
4. Lady, Stay Dead
5. Puberty Blues

Special shout-out to Lady, Stay Dead. Directed by Terry Bourke who has only directed a handful of flicks but in his pocket he holds two of the best 70's ozploitation horrors out there (Night of Fear and Inn of the Damned).

Lady, Stay Dead for me is his peak though. It's basically about a deranged handyman that runs amok in the suburbs under the pretence of doing jobs. Recommended for fans of ozified trash.
