Im trying to get a good list of reference albums for (melodic) black metal (not interrested in lo-fi black metal btw), so I was wondering if anyone had some good recommendations ?.. also if you got any "inside scoop" on what gear is used feel free to share it.

So far im using wolves in the throne room - two hunters as reference, its a solid raw production..
After some digging on google it seems like they track drums, bass and guitar at the same same and then do overdubs and layering later.

Moonsorow's album V: Havitetty.
My favorite as far as melodic black metal is concerned. Everything from atmospheric and ambient to more technical riffage and it's cool to have both in one package.

This one isn't so much straight up black metal, but Ashes Against the Grain by Agalloch, combines post rock, post metal and black metal into one neat package, very atmospheric and minimalistic at times and should be also exactly the kind of music you're looking for.

Good to see another fan of Wolves In the Throne Room here at the Sneap forum, absolutely fantastic band.

Not at all a black metal album, but a very black metal mix with the thin guitars, massive amounts of verb, etc. The best 'black metla' production imo, its one of my favourite mixes. Its a doom metal album though.

Draconian - Where Lovers Mourn (specifically the Cry of Silence).

Check out "Renihilation" by Liturgy. Not sure if this is too raw for you, but I dig it a lot. Quite raw, but still solid production by modern standards. There is some clipping going on, but I think this is intentional. I've been really into these guys lately. They look like hipsters but play some pretty solid black metal and are quite good live. ;-)

One of my favourite modern black metal productions (and one of their better albums musically), is Marduk's "Rome 5:12".

The drums sound so warm and natural while still being pounding (a quality that I always like on Dave Lombardo's drum sounds too). The bass has an awesome grind that's almost Meshuggah territory. The guitars are raw but still defined. A really nice package overall. Modern but not overly polished.

And some of the vocals were tracked through an human skull.

I like it a bit rawer than most examples above for the style you're referring to. Some examples of albums I consider having a good production for black metal:
Ulver - Bergtatt (style is somewhat similar to Wolves in the Throne room, so check this one out)
Enslaved - RUUN,
Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice and the albums thereafter.
Primordial - To the Nameless Dead,
Gorgoroth - ad majorem satanhas gloriam,
Armagedda - Ond Spiritism (guitars are a bit too thin though),
Trelldom - Til Minne (for those who like guitars with mids, mids and some more mids ),

Probably a lot of people here will hate most of these productions

Good production from the polished viewpoint:

Dark Funeral - Attera Totus Sanctus
Keep of Kalessin - Armada
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (say what you want, everything sounds very clear in the album! Even the bass guitar)
Rotting Christ - Sanctus Diavolos / Theogonia
Zyklon - World ov Worms (kind of on the limit between death and black)

Good production from the mood/feeling/expressiveness viewpoint:

Darkspace - Dark Space III
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Satyricon - Volcano / Now, Diabolical / The Age of Nero

Primordial - To the Nameless Dead

Speaking of not black metal (at least this album) :loco: Fucking love it though, and the production is so deliciously raw and roaring, and the emotion and power in the singer's voice is honestly unmatched IMO, absolutely incredible! And I'm sure this will give many people lulz, but honestly, it's about the rawest I can tolerate in terms of album production :D
