Good music stores in Melbourne?

The way I've avoided those issues is by never having bought a cab or amp head in my life :). There are so many guitarists around one can get by through borrowing. I look forward to living in a real country one day where I can keep my anus unclenched as I buy something.

 I'm starting to feel like that just knowing what you guys are paying for the gear you have. I'm not swayed towards any particular brand, just yet. I've only ever owned 1 metal amp and even then it was only a crate bv 1/2 stack. I dont think I'll ever have my paws on enough moolah to experiment and find a go-to-gear-brand. WOAH!!! I think I just had an epiphany on what GearSlutz is about...I'm under the impression that I am a Gear Slut at this moment.

You guys might take this for granted but I'm thrilled every single time I buy anything here because I pay either exactly what the tag says or find out that it was part of some secret sale I didn't know about and saves money. I like not having to carry a calculator or wear one of those really cool watches with 8 million buttons with calc function just to pick up a few basics through the week.

Just moved back to Melbourne from Ireland in the last couple of months....I'm still avoiding any stores other than Music Swap Shop or the Bass Centre in South Melbourne. Everything else is sourced online. I just received a new (old) bass from Japan, a box of strings from the US, a 2x10 bass cab from another local dude on OzBass, and a few bits and bobs via ebay. Billy Hydes can suck me before I drop a dime in there.

Of note: no import duties are charge by the post office for anything valued under $1000 these days.

Despite the shitty cost of gear, I'm very happy to be back after the best part of 15 years abroad.

searching other shopping sources online? do guys know any website that delivers anywhere in Asia, other than ebay or thomann? Of course with cheap shipping rates if ther's any.

HELL YEAH THATS AWESOME MAN!!! THANKS FOR THE INFO!!!
I haven't ordered anything from the states and had it shipped here (yet) because I've been trying to avoid this stamp duty I keep hearing about that gets slapped on everything within Australia's borders. This is great news even when considering the currency exchange rates fluctuation.

Just moved back to Melbourne

Welcome back dude!

Now of course I have to ask: West, East, South, North or City?

Also, I have to agree with Sparkyness; one of the best bargains I got was on ebay- Boss TU2 tuner for $130 delivered. Fuck paying $210 or whatever rediculous price they're asking at the shops.
Don't know if I'd buy a guitar or amp over ebay though.

Poid has the 2 chan Recto and 5150.....(or am I missing something in youir post Dan? I am hyped up on cold/flu medication )

I meant, Poida has an Engl cab, but do any of us have an Engl head?
Closest I know would be Shaun from In Malices Wake, though I too would much prefer to have a Savage/ Fireball/ E530 available over the Powerball.

The only things I could add to the list is my crappy line 6 podxt pro, schecter "diamond series" c-1+ w/ dimebucker & omen 6 that I try mixing through my alesis mk1 actives. Not the first bit of anything I have was bought brand new so I doubt any of it counts. But HEY!!! I might be able to add some pickups in the near future to the Melbourne Gear List. That will be a personal triumph in Oz.

Inner East - Hawthorn. Loving the area so far. Quiet and about as safe as Melbourne suburbs go. An easy transition for the missus too as she's Irish and had only been to Melb once before.

As a general rule in Melbourne and Australia in general, unless you're made of of money, avoid Mesa Boogie like the plague. A Road King head is over 8 grand. FUCK THAT.
I couldn't care less if it's one of the best amps ever, no amp is worth spending that much on.
Billy Hyde constantly has sales every few weeks, and if not, seemingly at least once a month. Always good to wait for those because you'll save at least 10 per cent there.
I've had the pleasure of saving 50 per cent on some stuff at Billy Hydes on the better sales they have had.

I'm finding that out the more I browse online. Seeing practice amps, single 12 and dual 12 combos in the 4+ thousand range is enough for me to have to change my undies. Thanks for the heads up, though, man. While smaller shops can occasionally offer a real bargain, the consistant buying power of larger stores would be more likely to offer better deals on a regular basis and mainly thats what I'd be after when buying new gear. Surely they'd be having blow-out sales for the end of the financial year, yeah?
