Good music stores in Melbourne?

I'm finding that out the more I browse online. Seeing practice amps, single 12 and dual 12 combos in the 4+ thousand range is enough for me to have to change my undies. Thanks for the heads up, though, man. While smaller shops can occasionally offer a real bargain, the consistant buying power of larger stores would be more likely to offer better deals on a regular basis and mainly thats what I'd be after when buying new gear. Surely they'd be having blow-out sales for the end of the financial year, yeah?

Well, AFAIK Mesa Boogie is one of those brands stores never do deals on unless they are desperate to more them. The cheapest I've seen a Dual Rec at Billy Hydes is 4095 AUD, and they are 4695 AUD to begin with, so hardly a significant saving.
ENGL is expensive too. Invaders 100 heads go for 5 grand new usually, sometimes you get 'em for 4 grand on sale though, so basically from really expensive to just expensive:lol:
HOWEVER.........I have gotten amazing deals on guitar strings at Billy Hydes.
I once got over 50 per cent off strings there, twas amazing:headbang:

I'm not doing anything remotely professional at the moment to be able to justify multiple thousands of dollars to buy an amplifier but 50% savings on ANYTHING be it strings, picks, straps, whatever.....Hell Yeah :headbang:

Oh - strings: Cranbourne Music (near RMIT in the city) and sometimes Allans have packs of 3-10 D'Addario's at really reduced prices. eg, EXL110 x 10 pack from Cranbourne Music $100. Depending where you'd buy the single packs from, that's like $50- 80 saved.

Strings, $100
Knowing where to get them, priceless.

.....is anyone else finding that I know of too many music stores around Melbourne, or is that just me?

no real contribution here, i just wanna put my hand up as being a recording engineer from melbourne too lol

but yes, +1 for importing EMG pickups. ill be damned if i buy anything from billy hydes ever again. unless its an instrument. even then, it'd have to be on extreme mates rates.

WHATS UP EVOLUTIONS_END?!
I know the feeling man. I was SOOOOOOO stoked to find other Melbourners on here. Its not like we'll ever plan to meet up for beers but just knowing there are others here is somewhat of a comfort. I've had buddies back in the states checking out Billly Hyde and Allans prices online and the responses I've gotten back are nothing out of the ordinary.
Quick re-cap: "HOLY *exploitive*" and "What the *exploitive*" for starters. Yeah, I'm not so sure I can afford enough lube to prepare for the prices down here in Oz.

Wtf?
I buy EXL110s all the time from Allans, for 10 bucks a pack. For a bulk pack, why would you still pay 100 bucks?, That makes no sense.
I've score 10 packs of EXL110s for 50 bucks at Billy Hydes when they had a sale.
I don't know what the deal with Cranbourne music is, but sale or not, Allans music charge 10 bucks per pack of EXL110s and 24 bucks for a triple.
Cranbourne really need to get in the game and lower their string prices:erk:

So you don't wanna jam at my house and have a beer with me?

I got my Dual Recto from that musicswapshop...there is another shop more towards north melbourne too...a second hand type store where I got my 5150...

I got my ENGL for $2900 New before Billy Hydes monopolised ENGL....

so has the ship sailed on this beer idea....?

im close mates with the guys at KCs rockshop in boronia. Nothing on Billy Hydes or Allans, but they stock gibson, ibanez, ESP, so i can sometiems get stuff at cost price, depending how much ass i kiss :)

i went in there for an adat/lightpipe cable a few weeks ago and they had no idea what it was so they tried to sell me a les paul studio...no

YO!!! I'm all down for some jamming and beers. Me and the wife are house sitting for her grandparents and its like living in the twilight zone minus the internet. Last night I realized there wasn't a single alarm clock in the entire house. WTF IS UP WITH THAT?! What kind of people dont have an alarm. Old ones apparently. But, STILL?! WTF?!

I'm going to have to take holidays to have enough time to check out all of these music joints. I know I could use some in the near future. I spotted a couple music shops on the way back from the job site in Preston today that I plan on checking out. One was called Wrights Music and the other was Mannys. A dude from work who knows nothing about music in general said "its one of those ultimate guitar shops" of Mannys.

P.S.
:kickass::kickass::kickass:

Yeah, I have to agree. I get my strings in from overseas at ~$50 for 10 packs, so the $100 thing doesn't make much sense to me.

When I use to get strings in single packs they were usually $14-$17 for the previously mentioned set, so the $100 deal seemed ok.
I may have to look around more when I'm due for more in light of this info though.

Ohhhhhhhh, I should mention, Troy Music in Footscray is having a sale right now. Guitar and bass strings are going for pretty cheap I hope. I'm heading over there, probably in the next 2 days, I'll let you guys know what kinda prices I got on strings.

Just don't talk to the old dude. He'll tell you about talking to the guys at Peavey and a violin customer that he thought was silly.... he tells me every time and two other people that I know who've bought shit from there.
