gr tone in mix test w. various cabs/mics (ENGL SE 6L6, Torpedo VB-101)

I prefer the condenser one myself, but with a bit of EQing I can see both work fine. I also agree with the meat comment...they lack a bit of that oomph. Great as far as torpedo goes though!

Your latest clip sounds pretty cool (much better than the ones you posted a while back) but a tad thin indeed. I would probably add 3~4 db at 100~120hz with a reasonably narrow Q factor.
I also think it is a bit dry so I'd blend just hint of early reflexions in there.

The two last at the bottom of the page are my favorite, but yeah, I'd definitely try to go for more low-end/low-mids.

Thanks for the comments guys...

What i'm gonna try next is :

* change my EMG 9V battery since it's old and maybe it needs to be replaced and i don't even know (i'm gonna A/B and see if it makes a difference)
* raise the bass knob on my ENGL EQ a wee bit (like half an hour, not more) to help bring back some body/beef/meat
* in the torpedo built-in EQ : raise the lows (120hz), low-mids (360hz) and highs (6Khz) values a wee bit (+1 on all three) to help bring back some body/beef/meat and increase the razor sharp/agressive effect a wee bit

-> see from there if it got beefy/bodied/meaty enough (i hope my changes won't be overkill), and maybe boost a bit with a wide Q around 600hz (to boost a 500-700hz range) if it needs to but i hope i won't have too
-> also record other songs to see if the tone works (with arpeggios, single notes, single notes PM, bends, ...)
-> fix the rest of the mix (especially that snare that needs some verb/EQ real bad)

sup mang! i really dig the tones you got. the "Engl30_SM57_New" one is my favorite. great attacky sound. they are all pretty dimey, but less gain/saturation and more bite/raw sound. I was thinking of getting a Savage, or possibly a Blackmore, but my Fireball doesn't sound much different than this, which is good! lol. 'cept a fireball has more of a djenty sound, which i kinda like, haha. but yeah, the clips sound really good! the guitars are a little thin overall, but that is a sound i like. but you can kinda make em sound fatter if ya get a huge bass sound with plenty of low end and mids, but not much highs ( i do this most of the time, lol).

I would like to hear one clip recorded with passive pickups.

Yeah i'd love that too :)

I think the EMG81 may not be the pickup to go for the kind of sound i want since avery tight/clean pup + a very tight/clean amp may be overkill and give a somewhat sterile tone.

I'm gonna do some A/B-ing in music stores soon, between one guitar with passive pups and an equivalent guitar with EMG81, played on the same ENGL amp.

New clips (dual-tracked guitars, hard-panned on each side, in a mix context and solo-ed, brand new strings this time, Torpedo built-in EQ & Exciter changes to cut even less lows/low mids/body and increase the mids/highs attack/agressivity/sharpness), see the 2009-12-20 samples below (details included) :

or here (.mp3 samples only, no details) :

Compared to my previous clips (2009-12-17) i raised the bass knob a wee bit (+ 0,5) on my amp EQ and raised each of the Torpedo built-in EQ knobs a tad (+1) and the exciter value (+2%) also.

I also gave the MD421 mic a try, but i kept the same settings as with my SM57 patch. It sounds decent but i guess i need to adjust the settings to the MD421 to get a better tone.

Also in addition to the usual punk-rock-ish snippet, i posted clips of some other songs that sound more metal/HxC.

DISCLAIMER : the playing is SLOPPY AS FUCK (a lotta huge mistakes here)

By the way i put a new 9V battery for my EMG81 but it didn't change the tone much, so i put the old one back in place (i guess it's still ok).
