...or just songs that completely differ in quality from the rest of the album, to the better or worse.

Incantation - Abolishment of Immaculate Serenity (awesome song - I'd say the album is merely 'good')
Nile - To Dream of Ur
Grotesque - Incantation (great band, but this song completely stands out)
Hellhammer - Triumph of Death
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark

The entire Incantation 'mortal throne of nazarene' album is awsome. Incanatation just ends the album with a more slow epic doomy long song to end the album on a higher note. It does not mean the rest of the tracks are not good. A lot of bands just record 8,9 songs that are all equal. Why not close off the album stepping it up a notch. The band is just showing their more doomy influences. The band does the samething at the end of Diabolical Conquest.

Demonic Incarnate is one of the strongest opening tracks on a death metal album.

Follow the Reaper (the album) by Children of Bodom

Everything after this album is just horrible. Even Hatebreeder and Something Wild are back and forth. Despite their consistent overrated shit, This album somehow came out fuckun INCREDIBLE.

In Death-Is Death by Meshuggah (I think it was that track)

I did this thread quite a while ago

Future Breed Machine on Destroy Erase Improve got my vote for being an amazing song, but all the other Meshuggah I've heard as been merely average, and too samey.

Nothing else comes to mind right now that has a huge gap in quality between one song and the rest. I think metal in general is usually more consistent on a song to song basis than other genres, except for maybe jazz. That seems consistent too I suppose.

Blackened is one of Metallica's best songs for me - unfortunately, it's on a weak and boring album.

Man... are you alright?? That is a complex and amazing album in every small aspect. Maybe you should give it a try again, try using earphones, maybe you'll find small details you never paid attention before. Although, I'm pretty sure you know this album very well. :p

Soilwork - Chainheart Machine
Prime example of an excellent album (if that's allowed under this topic) by an average, if not downright shitty band. My only complaint is that Speed waited to flex his vocals muscles on latter Soilwork releases, which are vastly inferior in an instrumental sense when compared with Chainheart.

Agreed.

I would add "Freedom" by Gorefest from "Soul Survivor" - amazing opener, but the other songs just didn't live up to it in terms of feel or composition.

"Sight for sore eyes" from "Come down cold" by Konkhra - great track from what was a big dissapointment of an album.

"Damned in Black" from "Damned in Black" by Immortal - the rest of the songs seemed really, REALLY dull by comparison.

Great thread, btw.

Those mid-era Immortal releases are indeed bland for the most part. People rip on SoND, but that's much better than the immediately preceeding material.

I would argue that the NBC and FNF era Soilwork albums are better. FNF, despite a dozen songs with identical formulaic structure has many good hooks, and is a good melodic, poppy metal album. It's a guilty pleasure of mine to this day. Early Soilwork tries way too hard to be aggressive.

And Justice For All would be better if the songs were shorter. Not enough riffs and tempo changes for the lengths of the songs. How many times are are you going to repeat a few basic parts. The songs would be unlistenable without any kind harmonies or solos to break up the songs.

A few that obviously stand out from albums in a positive way (not necessarily to say the rest of the album isn't good):
Immortal - Beyond the North Waves
Hellhammer - Triumph of Death
Bruce Dickinson - Tears of the Dragon
Burzum - My Journey to the Stars
Nachtfalke - Ragnarok
Nachtfalke - Einherher
Mutiilation - Magical Shadows of a Tragic Past

I've always wondered why people never really talked much about Soilwork. I like them quite alot except for Figure Number Five which is outright horrible.
I can see why people would not approve of them though.

Haha, I missed an obvious one. The first two songs off Destroyer of Worlds. Don't even ask me why I bought that album.

(I liked it at the time I bought it...)

Exactly what I think except that I listen to Figure Number Five occasional. I guess I just have a strong stomach. :D

you must not like a lot of black metal bands then, as a lot of BM songs consists of 2-3 riffs repeated over and over for 10 minutes.
