Witchcraft RULES.

I still have not heard the new Borknagar...

Witchcraft DOES indeed rule. I actually love something recommended by Nate, not an easy task

I was pleasantly surprised with Borknagar. LOTS of death-type growls, and a very "epic" theme and production running through the album. Good shit fo' sho'

Not many around here seem to really dig the album... hence the reason I haven't been stepping over my mother to get it. It's style is something that I tend to enjoy, though. I'll probably end up picking it up sometime.

How does it compare to their earlier stuff? Should I get this or Empiricsim?

Get Empiricism, as it's nearly flawless. Epic, on the other hand, leaves quite a lot to be desired. They've gone way to progressive (although that word should give you a hard-on) for my likings this time, and Vintersorg's vocals are way over the top at times. It's not really that epic at all either. A disappointment.

I loved Empiricism as well, though I completely disagree with HM's synopsis of the new one. Yes, it has some very progressive elements, but it also has its fair share of riffing, good folk/viking passages, and some superb acoustic pieces as well. Fuck, I liked it, but then again, I'm much easier to please than the Royal Carnage Illuminati.

that witchcraft album is so great, if there was ever an album more perfect for listening to on vinyl, I don't know what it would be!.......... now just too bad its been sold out everywhere for a long time as far as I can find...

I have a Witchcraft Bootleg if any of you are interested. I'll throw it up on yousendit as i don't have any CD-Rs.

Is this live? Or some rehearsal thing? I would LOVE to hear Witchcraft without the voice synthesizer.

BWD, you should really check out the new Vintersorg album... it has prog written all over it. Actually, Vintersorg is in this otherband called Waterfield that is basically a 70's prog rock thing (not metal) that I guess will be great. But anyway, if you want his latest ("The Focusing Blur") then hit me up on AIM.

weird Borknagar news, are they capable of curbing their excesses, or just translating them into a new medium?

"Dear fans and associates,

Having created epic metal for several years now, an idea and a vision has arisen within the Borknagar camp, and we hereby want to inform you about how it will affect our forthcoming release: The next BORKNAGAR album will be an acoustic effort based entirely on the epic and progressive aspect of the band. The recording will commence this very spring, most likely in late May, at Toproom Studio in Norway as we are planning an autumn release.

This is something we have wanted to do for many years now, and the idea has lingered within the band ever since the recording of Quintessence and a few private sessions with a grand piano and an acoustic guitar. The album will be acoustic based but largely arranged with a wide range of instruments and vocal styles. It will be recorded by the same line-up that did EPIC, and we will be working with different locations during the recording process in order to catch the sounds of different acoustic environments. Musically the album will be rather dissimilar from what we have done before, though the unique BORKNAGAR-sound will surly shine through.

This is not a permanent change of the bands musical style, but rather a musical quest and a challenge for us as well as for our audience!

The title of the album will be released soon.

Best regard,

Øystein G. Brun
BORKNAGAR"
