Hey guys,

Its been a while since I last visited, great to see things really happening in here!

I was wondering, has Andy ever posted, or would he consider ever posting short samples of guitar sounds from actual albums he has recorded and mixed straight after the tracking stage? No post tracking processing. Basically what came off the mic.

It would be great to A/B guitars to his to see if you are in the ballpark or not at that stage. If I'm totally off, then I know I gotta work at perfecting the tracking stage, if im close or ballpark, then I would know its post tracking processing that I'd need to work on.

thanks,

maybe the main man will see this and kindly do a quick bounce of some tracks for us?!!!! wishfull thinking hey!

I also forgot to ask, does anyone know what his go to mic preamp is for recording guitars? I'd like to know his signal chain right leading up to the DAW.

thanks!

I think API for the most part? I could be wrong though.

Why would you want to have a sample? MatchEQ? Toontrack offers an Andy Sneap EZmix pack which has some of his guitar sounds in there. Not sure how tweak-able it is but it might be what you're looking for. http://www.toontrack.com/product/andy-sneap-ezmix-pack/

I think the OP was actually serious about becoming better at micing up amps and wanted to hear what a pro track sounded like before processing. Crazy, but occasionally it happens around here . The sneap pack is pretty sweet but I think it reflects more of a post processed / finished guitar sound.

Seems like I read to many post about match EQ on this forum which is why it was my expectation. :goggly: Yes, there's definitely value in hearing recorded signals before any post processing is done to get a sense for how it sounded at that stage.

There are quite a few cool studio making of or documentaries out there (Opeth, Ihsahn, Strapping Young Lad, Roadrunner All Star sessions, The Panic Room Studio,...) which are all great to watch. Not all of them are very technical but it's possible to pick up some cool things from watching closely. The new Conquering Dystopia making of should be released soon btw which I'm very interested in.

Hey guys,

thanks for the reply's and video links, etc.

Have checked out the ez mix stuff from toontrack, killer stuff but it deals mainly with "fit in the mix" end result type stuff which I wont really learn too much from. Who knows what tracking/processing has taken place, its too hard to guess. This doesnt mean I probably wont buy them and use them but I much prefer to try and do the hard work myself and learn through that process. Again, without hearing things at various stages it just leaves me to speculate and guess.

The main reason I also asked if there were any samples from actual released albums is because you know for sure that Andy would have done his absolute best on those albums (tracking and mixing stages) and so they are great references.

thanks,

IMHO the raw guitar sound should sound pretty awesome already and need very little post processing. andy has also said before that he uses only light eq and compression (and only if needed) or his guitar tracks. what you hear on sneap mixes is probably very close to the raw tone.

bet those DI's would sound great through lots of stuff, let alone andy's studio/gear and his ability to dial in/mic up great guitar sounds. I remember one of those clips had a Pod version too that sounded really good too, albeit not as good as the mic'd tracks. suppose its a good lesson for making sure the guitar is well maintained, choosing the right one for the job and making sure the playing/tuning is good.

those make me miss my krank a bit. awesome sounds.

Thanks for this tracks man ! This helped me a lot ! Now i know andy don't use sm57 to micing cab haha lol ...I ´ve tried to get the same sound with all my gear(engl pb ,6505 ,mesa rectifier ,mesa cab ,engl cab , marshall cab , esp gibson ltd guitars , od9 and 808 ) with new strings ,battery with only one 57 and it´s impossible to get the same sound the 57 can't take high frequency like andy samples.. I've more high with 421.. Maybe andy mix the two or he as secret .. I don't know...
