Can someone please explain to me what exactly is a "powertab?" Do I need install anything to use it? Any help would be great, thanks.

yes you need the program "Power Tab Editor" to view Powertab (.ptb) files

Guitar pro is leaps and bounds beyond powertab, but unfortunatley is not free.

It's better in NO WAY besides the drum aspect. I hate that program. It's good for making unprofessional pieces of crap (which also take 4000 times longer to make), which I'm afraid make up the vast majority of the files on mysongbook.com. That program is atrocious! It's easier to just get txt tabs and they're usually more accurate than those. Yuck. Puke. It lacks pretty much any kind of subtleties in notation, and I just think powertab looks better. If you print a powertab, it looks pretty much identical to official guitar tab books, while guitar pro is just gross. The pay aspect makes it ten times as ludicrous cause it's far worse of a program.
