many ways to get good before you get better , teach yourself to play by hearing , listen more than you play , and then jam with your friends , just jam around , you'll learn things from them and they will learn from you ... get books and read about songs and what not , and every now and then get someone to give you lessons ... but the best advice is to PRactice and do more practice whenever you can , no matter what ...
i started playing guitar like over 10 years ago , but it was only the last 6 years that i gotten more serious , to the point where now i'm happy to be the youngest in a pro band , but no one can say anything about my playing cause i worked really hard on my playing tech , asked alot , if i didn't know something i say i don't know , "even if it means everyone laoughing at me lol and it happened alot" but i learned to play PROPER rythem playing , and am a lead guitarist , still learning , and always will be ..
the thing is you take your time , and just slow things down , then speen them up as you go ..
i now write riffs that i have never thought i could even play 8 years ago .. your creative side will come when you are very comfortable , and when you start knowing your way around your instrument ..
a good guitar that's well set up , a good sound combined by a greaet will to listen and learn will take you far ...
i still look up to alot of the great guitarests around me and i think that one day i will be as good and maybe better "but it takes years you see" ...
the main thing is that you have the will , the appetite to do it and you are serious about your music ... start with things like power metal and even old metallica classics ... work on your picking style , your muting and semi muting , your open chords and your fully muted notes , have be clear , and you should be able to hear it very well , lower your Gain on your amp to 5 , it will make you play better and cleare "I use 6 even on stage , and you can not get any clearer belive me lol you just have to play tighter and clearer then cause every note you get out of place will then stand out , but the sound is amazing" ...
don't know if this helps , but it is partly how i did/do things ... and i'm going to get lessons from a Jazz guitarist that i really admire ... so yeah ..
good luck my friend , and yes , Opeth is great in the sence where they are pro at what they do and they do it well , i would love to play along to them one day .... great guys and great musos
