So that we don't contaminate other threads with djent debates, let's bring it all to one sweet sexy thread! What are your favorite bands? Do you think djent is retarded? Do you think it's revolutionary? What exactly defines djent? What djent bands could be ProgPower-suitable?

Here are some of my faves, all of which I think would rock the PP stage hard:

and of course, the band that in my humble opinion started the entire genre as we know it and love it (or hate it):

(No I don't credit Meshuggah for it. Meshuggah coined the term and came first, but they don't incorporate everything that these bands bring in.)

Oh and I purposely didn't mention Periphery or Tesseract cause I thought they were obvious.

I was kinda wondering about that. :D

Hmm, Sikth. I have an album of theirs around here somewhere; I might revisit it now if I can find it. :)

FWIW, I like a lot of what I've heard from Periphery, Tesseract and (of course) Meshuggah's ObZen. A bit surprisingly, phone requests from that Meshuggah CD have easily eclipsed requests from their earlier CDs we've gotten at WREKage.

I've been getting into this style a lot recently. I prefer when these types of bands are instrumental though, most of the vocals in these bands annoy me. I'm a big fan of Keith Merrow's stuff. I recently discovered this guy Paul Wardingham that has some really awesome stuff as well.

Count me as a djent hater. I never liked Meshuggah in the first place and now all these bands are coming out with this djent crap. To me this musical format is useless. It makes no sense. There's no catchiness, no melody, it's jarring, structureless, head ache inducing, artery rupturing, unadulterated noise. My brain cannot understand it. I am not doubting their abilities as musicians as they are probably the best in the metal genre, but to me djent sounds stunted, flowless, unmetal. Yes I call it unmetal for whilst heavy it has no magical metal feel and most importantly of all very little melody. It's still better than black metal though I give you that!

Circles... liked the vocal melodies, hated the music.

Nociceptor... liked the first half of the song... than it went south.

Monuments... couldn't make it to the 30 second mark.

Truthfully, I would have never guessed these bands possessed a common, yet unique enough trait worthy of a new genre tag. Hadn't even heard of djent until this thread.

9/10 bands that say they are 'prog metal' these days are djent. Very tiring music. I too can only handle/enjoy it in small doses.

For all that you can handle (they cover other forms of metal too)... check out http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/

There are some djent blogs/sites out there, but they don't filter very well.

Understandable. IF you have a hard time grasping something it's less likely to entertain you. But on topic, I have 2 favorites:

Cilice - I found out about this band by listening to the back catalog of bands that have played ProgPower Europe. Good stuff.

Textures - This one popped up on Myspace while I was trying to give Periphery a shot. They are music more accessible (at least on the stuff I've heard) than most of the djent bands I've heard because in a lot of the songs, it's only parts that do the polyrhythmic stuff.

I must be outta the loop because what makes this different from, say, regular prog? I can hear the distinct guitar sound and the odd time signatures, but...

Zero Hour would be considered Djent and not Prog?

Nevermore, which has that guitar sound and at times odd signatures, can be considered somewhat Djent?

Ram-Zet, a fave band of mine, considered Djent and not Black Prog?
