Headbangers Hangover, is there a cure?

i just played 2 sets last night and went wild, first show in a while but this morning my neck AHHHH.

im wondering how touring bands that play every day, deal with this stuff? or anybody have any advice how to not get headbangers hangover? stretching? just not headbang as crazy? (not a solution tho)

First couple nights is usually rough. Usually stretch and warm up. But once you are playing regularly and you get into shape, it isn't so bad. Touring is like robot mode so it really isn't bad.

Interestingly for me, I find whirlwinds or full on headbanging is easier on my neck than sort of half-headbanging. Oh and also, headbang with your back, not your neck if that makes sense. Not sure how that works, but after getting that advice from a fellow long-time headbanger who was older than I, I somehow started doing it and it helps as well. Maybe more to do with the full on headbanging.

painkillers, booze, or heroin. It's best to slowly build up your addiction so you can afford more as your fame increases.

Hahaha gold!

I get a seriously sore neck after every show as a spectator. When I was in a band I used to get it too, because when your not a massive band and you dont play shows every night its hard to build up the strength to the point where it wont hurt. Stretching is the way to go but I always forget and pay the price the next day.

The trick is to warm up before the gig. Stand and roll your head around slowly + front to back. Slow motions. You'll feel nothing after the gig if you do this for 10-15 minutes before the show.

This.
Even just a few minutes of stretching your neck before a show will mean it wont hurt so much in the morning. If you can get a full 10-15 minutes in you'll feel nothing at all the next day.

Headbanging it`s cool but in time will ruin your neck, shoulders and back. Better stop doing it already or do it occasionaly.
Tom from Slayer is just an addition to the list of people suffering from this prolonged activity so Jason Newsted...

Ahhh the classic Bangover

Nothing you can do about it. It's like diving into exercise programs right away...first couple days after you will be broken.

Playing everyday is different, cause your body just gets used to it, and your neck adapts.
First two or three shows of tour are hell, then you're fine.

Just don't do it. It looks retarded anyways. Find another way to amuse the children.

You need to build up your neck & shoulder muscles dude.
Obviously, the more you headbang at practice, the more you can headbang at gigs without fucking your neck

Neckups...

Lay on you back (use a bench or bed) with your head off the bed/bench/whatever put a weight against your forehead... lay your head all the way back, then bring it to your chin...

You can also do this on your sides and stomach for overall strength...

I used to do this alot when I wrestled.. great for neck strength and golden for headbanging.. my neck never hurts..

Also, the headbanging "with your back" is great, but hard to do with a guitar/bass/etc since it mainly means bending from the waist and locking your neck (atleast that's how I imagine it)

I agree with this in certain cases (Kerry King for example..) Do Not Headbang If: Your bald or don't have hair long enough to move... you.. look.. stupid! imo

EDIT: The above is meant for people on the stage... not the fans.. fans can do whatever they want.. because they're paying not playing :D
