I'm totally digging the new Naglfar, especially the first song, "A Swarm of Plagues". That song fucking slays! Anyway, assuming that Naglfar qualifies as whatever passes for Black metal these days, who would you recommend that I check out, based on my love for "Pariah"? Thanks.

Glad you're really digging this one Greg, it's right up there with my top releases of the year as well, behind TGE and the new Moonsorrow.

I'm very interested in hearing people's responses as well to this one.

The new Naglfar contains blackish death/thrash with a touch of melody thrown in there as well. I'm not sure there's anything out there I'm aware of that their sound is directly comparable to. I've heard comparisons made to some Dissection, The Crown (if you haven't given Deathrace King enough of a chance, I highly suggest you do so), Dark Fortress, Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir. However, none of those bands directly sound like Naglfar, they just contain similar elements.

Dissection, Dawn, Sacramentum, The Legion & Astriaal.

Oddly enough it was Naglfar's Sheol that got me into black metal in the first place... not that long ago, really. If this isn't a gateway band, I dunno what is.

I'm uploading samples from Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane

This is where Naglfar came from..

Agreed with the Dawn recommendation, though I wouldn't directly compare them to Naglfar as I feel Dawn are far more progressive sounding. Nevertheless, if you haven't scored yourself a copy of the Slaughtersun reissue Greg, I definitely suggest you nail one down. I got mine at The End, it's a 2 cd issue with Slaughtersun and three other releases as well, one of which is a surprising batch of straightforward death metal. Not sure if you'd enjoy that portion of the release, but I really think you'll enjoy the rest of it.

Jason... I'll check out Slaughtersun. Is that the name of the band or an album by Dawn?

Decadent... thanks, I'll check those out as well.

Dev... I'll listen to that soundclip as soon as I get home. I love bands that open new genres.

As much as Dissection is dead now , they were a good if not the best black/death metal band. Storm of the Light's Bane = an absolute reference in (extreme) metal .

An album by Dawn. If I remember correctly, the Slaughtersun reissue captures all of Dawn's releases up to this point on one 2 cd release.

From what I understand, they are in the process of finally releasing a new one as well.

storm of the light's bane and somberlain make me wet. still. after massive overlistening. As for naglfar, i enjoy them, but they aren't REALLY my thing... their sound makes my ears hurt.

Have you had a chance to check out Pariah yet? You may be surprised at what you hear. They're still very aggressive, but are definitely evolving toward a more accessible sound (in a good way).

this man speaks the truth.

that album, along with taake - nattestid and ulver - bergtatt & nattens madrigal and i'm pretty much set for black metal (though i do have more).

I wouldn't agree that you're set for black metal, but man, those are fucking premium choices. Cheers to you and your taste!!!

below the lights fucking smokes, why more black metal groups don't go in that type of direction instead of the dimmu borgir one is beyond me.

oh yeah, are any other enslaved albums like that one? or other progressive black metal i should check out? i've heard early enslaved, don't bother suggesting that junk. :dopey:
