Well, since they will be playing at this year's show, and I'm one of the co-sponsors, I guess I ought to pimp Stride a little. :loco:

"Travesty" off the Music Machine cd is my favorite song, and it might fit what you're looking for. It's definitely on the lighter side (more rock than metal) but check it out and see what you think. You can download it for free off Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006JBJA/qid=1120620127/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-1099506-1562565

(Then buy the cd anyway!)
:Smokin:

...and if any of you Stride-guys read this, you better make Travesty part of the set!!

A very nice song...would be a great song with some vocals.

Here's a couple off the top of my head:

Silent Force: Spread Your Wings - Love this friggin' song. Just love it.

I'm sure I'll be adding more :) Good thread!

Great Song!

lol, i beg to differ but hey- its your thread :loco:

Don't get me wrong, I love both Van Halen and Journey. I have seen JOURNEY mutiple times live and saw Van Halen on Diver Down. Two of the greatest front men ever!

I just would not classify either one of them as prog or power metal.

John west is a stand out in this type of song. He is IMHO one of the very best there is. :worship:

didn't see prog or power, i thought you just meant hardrock/metal ballads

Ahhhh,

Yes, if it was ballads in general , it would not be a discussion if Journey was not listed. They are the kings of rock(aor)ballads.

Although I have heard of 80% of what has been sugested, there are some great jems here I did not know about. Thanks for everyones input and I hope that it continues.

You ain't heard nothing until you hear him in concert, i was lucky enough to hear Royal Hunt in Korea with JK and SM before they left, but it was John West's voice that stole the show. In person it is the most powerful voice i have ever heard and YES< he can hit notes higher than the clouds, and just his stage presence and the rappore he establishes with his audience. John West is the Man.

One the best songs that havent been mentioned already is Whales lungs by this band called Delight. Music and vocals are beautiful. Band in general reminds me of The Gathering or Mandeolyn days. The album Eternity is packed with great tunes. New one isnt too bad either but like the gathering they went a little trippy

I was wondering if I could get some ideas from all of you on some killer melodic metal songs out of the prog/power genre. I have listed below a small sampling of what I am talking about.
:

They're not quite "metal", but for the type of song you're talking about ("melodic" hard rock/metal), I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who does it better than Enchant. They have a definite Rush influence in their style (and heaviness), but unquestionably have their own style. I also think their singer has one of the best voices in rock/metal.

I'd highly recommend getting the following CDs by them, in order:

"Break"
"Juggling 9 or Dropping 10"
"Blueprint of the World" (their debut)

Their other discs are good, but those three are their best, IMHO.

Enjoy,

Craig

I am also huge fan of ballads. I just don't like those ballads that repeat themselves at the end like Edguy's Land of a Mircle. That is the only part of the song I cannot stand. Nehoo, on with the ballads!

Manowar- Heart of Steel
Within Temptation- Farewell
Edguy- Another Time
Angra- Wishing Well
Firehouse- Love of a Lifetime
Winger- Miles Away
Def Leppard- Have you ever needed someone so bad
Whitesnake- Headed for a heartbreak

If I can think of anymore, I will add them to this post

Keep Rockin'!
saMetal

I suggest Vanden Plas. They are very melodic.
Another one is Avalon's "Eurasia." It is about four years old, but it's a masterpiece as far as melodic metal in my ears. My last suggestion is actually a side project called "Ascension Theory." It is very good.
