HERRSCHAFT est un groupe français comme son patronyme ne l’indique pas. Un mot qui signifie domination dans la langue ultra gutturale de Goethe. Ca sonne plutôt pas mal avec leur univers musical et avec un nom bourrin de cette trempe, le quatuor parisien a intérêt à détoner sévère, chose qui sera faite. Le combo francilien souhaiterait il ainsi asseoir sa suprématie sur le reste du monde ?
Auteurs d’un EP Architects of The Humanicide paru deux années auparavant, HERRSCHAFT avait étalé de sérieux gages de qualité quant à son concept musical, impétueux mélange littéraire, cinématographique et musical où tout s’imbrique en une unité graphique et sonore. Dans le concept et le style, on pourrait par exemple faire un parallèle et rapprocher les travaux des français de ceux de WHITE ZOMBIE comme sur leur superbe album de remix Supersexy Swingin’Sounds, à savoir une recherche sophistiquée de sonorités modernes et de rythmiques Metal déchirées.
Leur premier enregistrement studio Tesla, édité sur le label italien code666 (EPHEL DUATH, MANES, BLOODSHED) s’annonce ainsi comme l’album de la confirmation. En effet, on flaire une évolution bien sentie depuis leur MCD et le moins que l’on puisse dire est que HERRSCHAFT n’a rien laissé au hasard. De cette façon, et dans son ensemble, les arrangements se sont largement améliorés en terme de mélodies, en instinct mais aussi en feeling. Ce premier opus reprend les canons et standards qui ont fait la réussite de leurs débuts : un Cyber Metal orné de samples Electro, de riffs astringents et d’un chant spécial à la lisière du Black-Metal le plus pithiatique. Grâce au renfort de gros beats artificiels et autres eurythmies technoïdes, HERRSCHAFT se pare pour restituer ses atmosphères froides et avant-gardistes à travers ce concept album scindé en deux grands mouvements aussi dissemblables que proches. Telle une macque servant à broyer le lin et le chanvre pour en récupérer les fibres, HERRSCHAFT s’essaye à nous mitrailler l’encéphale de ses ritournelles Metal technoïdes afin de nous en ôter notre moelle et notre substance.
De leurs expérimentations d’Electro Metal fulgurant, on conservera en mémoire (si HERRSCHAFT le permet) des pistes profusément chamarrés car celles ci possèdent leurs propres spécificités distinctes telles que les mémorables «The Grand Architects», l’intéressant travail sur «Nemesis» et également la somptueuse «Vortex». HERRSCHAFT bâti de solides et plaisantes compositions qui font de cet opus une réussite dans le genre même si, pour ma part, les basses ne sont pas assez profondes et rondes ce qui pourtant aurait renforcé les sonorités graves des compositions fort abouties du quatuor français. Pourtant, cela n’enlève en rien au mérite de ce groupe talentueux qui parvient à traduire musicalement et de belle manière son concept artistique. Un groupe prometteur mais déjà affirmé qui pourrait bien être notre THE COVENANT ou une sorte de RAMMSTEIN national dans un style toutefois moins martial !

Electro dark, chitarroni metal e cantato abrasivo derivante dal black: una miscela che non è più originale, ma che agli Herrschaft è riuscita decisamente bene. Sebbene siano ormai parecchie le band che si sono cimentate in questo genere (non mi pare più il caso di parlare di sperimentazione), non è tuttavia accaduto tanto spesso che la miscela sia risultata tanto equilibrata. Durante l'ascolto di "Tesla" si rimane infatti costantemente in bilico tra il mondo metal e quello electro, tanto che non si sa mai se farsi prendere dalla voglia di sculettare o di fare headbanging (sebbene la componente danzereccia sia, alla fine, quella prevalente). L'immaginario della band è anch'esso non esattamente originale, tuttavia è adeguato alla musica: l'album è infatti un concept basato su una distopia di un mondo futuro magnifico ed evoluto dominato dai “grandi architetti" (descritto nella prima metà del disco) che ovviamente ad un certo punto decade e finisce per autodistruggersi (seconda metà del lavoro). Anche la produzione, "futuristica" quanto basta, è quanto di meglio ci possa essere per il sound proposto.

"Tesla" è quindi un disco assolutamente non rivoluzionario ma molto ben fatto, credo che gli amanti di questo tipo di sonorità non solo lo apprezzeranno, ma si segneranno anche gli Herrschaft come una realtà da seguire con attenzione per il futuro.

La France serait-elle en train de se parer d’une scène métal indus de premier ordre ? Après le débarquement de The Cnk et les déjà bien installés Punish Yourself, c’est désormais Herrschaft qui créé l’évènement avec sa première production longue durée intitulée "Tesla".

La surprise n’est pas totale, le groupe parisien s’étant déjà fait remarquer avec son premier EP “Architects Of Humanicide”. Rien d’étonnant non plus à ce qu’il revienne auréolé d’une fraîche signature sur le label italien Code666. Bien que modeste, le label permet à Herrschaft de voir les choses en grand : Son massif, visuel soigné… La forme est impeccable.

Le fond, quand à lui, est plutôt impressionnant pour un groupe aussi jeune. L’electro/indus métal des frenchies est fougueux, dynamique, direct tout en étant riche et fouillé. Se succèdent un éventail d’ambiances dansantes ("Human Soul", "I Am The One"), planantes (« Tesla » et ses arabesques vocales par Sarah de The Outburst, le très doux « Nemesis") ou encore de pures décharges d’adrénaline teintées de mélancolie ("The Defenders", juste imparable). Herrschaft réussit donc à éviter le piège de la redondance et son souci de varier son propos se constate également dans la construction des morceaux, qui évite pour l'essentiel une linéarité souvent inhérente au style ("Vortex").

Plus globalement, on retrouve évidemment un ensemble de passages obligés du genre : Les riffs tranchants à la Rammstein, l’utilisation de samples etc. Mais ici, les éléments électroniques ont la part belle et le groupe arrive - assez miraculeusement - à se doter d’une identité propre, quelque part entre The Kovenant et Flesh Field.

Alors, histoire d’être tatillon, on pourra reprocher à ce "Tesla" quelques menus détails : Une production qui donne un son puissant mais en contrepartie semble un peu trop compacte, étouffante. On aurait également pu souhaiter des guitares un peu plus "lourdes". Ou encore, les tentatives de chant clair sur "Apocalypse Child", sans être ratées, sonnent plus hasardeuses que le reste.

Mais au final, ce premier opus de Herrschaft est une vraie réussite qui s’impose directement comme un must-have pour tout amateur de métal indus.

Our world is made of two parts: Before, and after the reign of human race. This is the main concept of "Tesla”, an invitation to join HERRSCHAFTs trip to discover those two worlds. Hailing from France, this collective already attracted attention with their latest EP "Architects Of The Humanicide", which led to the deal with code666 last year. Now they unleash again a mix of modern Black Metal and harsh EBM, divided into "The Sterilized World”, dealing with the high tech, sterile and nearly perfect society, and "The Chaotic Landscapes”, the downfall of man and the ruins left behind, close to movies like "Mad Max”, "12 Monkey” or "Blade Runner”.

Musicwise HERRSCHAFT can easily compared with acts like THE KOVENANT, ...AND OCEANS, VNV NATION and DEATHSTARS, the dark and cold synthesizer sounds fuse with the rhythm guitars to build a futuristic kind of electro metal. The music on "Tesla” is – like on most electro metal releases – on the one hand extreme and aggressive, then on the other changing to a dark atmosphere, containing also danceable parts ("The Defenders” for example, surprising with a straight electronic beat). On "Valliant” the black metal influences shine through, "Nemesis” is the opposite song and comes with a melancholic temper and only a few metal parts.

Tesla is a very diversified album, combining all elements of a typical electro metal release, with a little Gothic and EBM touch. The only negative point is that the songs sound too similar, most parts don't get a hook in the ear and need a few repeats. But this is the attraction "Tesla” provides, to discover it over and over again, and get amazed by this soundtrack to the human apocalypse, lovers of electro metal should check it out in any case.

Herrschaft is a French electro (black) metal band hailing from the capital of France. This band was born late 2004 as a three-piece, which quickly released a first EP called 'Architects Of The Humanicide'. This EP already had an excellent review on our webpage, which I ended with the following phrase: "I can’t wait to hear a full lenght of these guys, because the 22 minutes of this EP are a bit short". Two years, and a little line up change later - the full-lenght has been released upon mankind. 'Tesla' consists of 11 tracks, and doubles the time lenght of the debut EP. The album is released by the well-respected Code 666 label, which we know from past releases of Aborym a.o.

The release kicks off with 'Valliant'. The track includes wicked sampling, bashing drums and innovative guitarwork. It's an accessable midtempo song, which is excellent to bring you in the mood for more. 'Human Soul' is more electronic based. It's driven on powerful EBM likely synthlines and wicked drumwork, while added recogniseable vocal lines and powerful riffing. 'The Grand Architects' is more atmospheric. It has a gentle future pop synthline, easy going though powerful drumming and vocal lines that switch from harmonized ones to evil metal ones. 'Under Perfect Control' comes up next. It's again a more atmospheric song, with modern sampling and dark vocal lines and riffing. 'The Defenders' is a short and straight to the point electro black metal song, with more symphonic parts switching to more brutal parts. The track overall is blessed with very wicked drumming. The title track, 'Tesla', has more experimental keylines and sampling. It also contains midtempo drumming, straight to the point riffing and recogniseable vocal lines, which makes it a quite accessable track. 'Nemesis' is a very gentle track, build on a protounding bassline, with an outgoing chorus. It's clearly the track with the most wave influences on the album. 'I am the One' is again more midtempo, with great electronic sampling and heavy, black metal influenced riffing. The powerful drumming and the strong vocal lines fit the song excellently. 'Chaostructure' is a nice mixture of electro black metal and symphonic black metal, with powerful electrified parts switching to more symphonic ones. Again, the track includes very wicked drumming. 'Apocalypse Child' is a nice midtempo track with future pop keylines, experimental guitar work and, surprisingly, the first clean vocal lines on the record - which might sound weird in the beginning, but it fits the song with ease. The release ends with the longest track on the release, called 'Vortex'. It's an accessable track, with doomy influences and recogniseable vocal lines - a good end of this release.

When you compare this full-lenght with the 'Architects Of The Humanicide' EP, you can clearly spot a few differences. Where the old stuff was mainly black metal based, this full-lenght gives you lots of elements out of wide genres such as future pop, EBM, wave and even a little ambient. As well, the more hyperactive and spastic song structure has basically dissapeared. Still (some of) the songs are quite experimental, but the band shows a great progression when it comes to matureness. 'Tesla' turned out to fulfil the high expectations I had up front with ease. It shows great song structures, excellent variation, experimental passages and very wicked sampling and drumming all over the record, which should make any electro metal fan drool.

Frankreich mausert sich in Sachen Musik. Wo früher France Gall, Mireille Matthieu, Gilbert Becaud oder Vanessa Paradis dominierten, erscheinen nun Bands wie BLUT AUS NORD, AGGRESSOR, MASSACRA, KRAGENS und starke Industrial-Bands wie OBSZÖN GESCHÖPF oder wie hier in dem Fall HERRSCHAFT.
Diese verbinden Black Metal mit EBM und das wirklich gekonnt. Als Richtungsweiser könnte man eventuell THE KOVENANT oder DEATHSTARS nennen, aber auch nur wegen dem Stil, denn HERRSCHAFT gefallen mir besser als ihre skandinavischen Kollegen.

Finster geht es zu bei den Franzosen. Finster, aber tanzbar. „Tesla“ dürfte in einschlägigen Clubs mega angesagt sein. Ein Schuss MINISTRY, eine Prise VNV Nation und schon hat man den Sound von HERRSCHAFT. Eine extreme Version von SAMAEL. Doch genug mit den Vergleichen, denn das Trio ist sehr eigenständig. Das treibende „Human Soul“ mit begleitenden Synthies, aggressive verzerrte, aber dennoch melodische Vocals. Überhaupt bestechen HERRSCHAFT durch eingängige Tonfolgen, die die Gitarre hervorzaubert. „The Grand Architects“ beginnt dann schon fast wie klassischer Heavy Metal, bevor man eine durchgezogene Knarre hört und der Titel sich zu einem fast schleppenden Electronic/Black-Track entwickelt. HERRSCHAFT nehmen Dich mit auf eine Reise durch die frostige Kälte. „Under Perfect Control“ ist mein absoluter Lieblingssong auf diesem Album. Aggressiver Chorus, der zum Mitgröhlen animiert, verträumte elektronische Klänge und böses Drumming bestimmen diesen Track und die geilen Melodien werden nicht vergessen. „Close the window, close the window! I’m afraid! The vampire” … mit diesem Sample einer gar ängstlichen weiblichen Stimme beginnt “The Defenders” und ist dann wohl der Hit des Albums. Schnell, tanzbar, kraftvoll! Nun, ich bin ja nicht so der Tänzer, aber der Song lädt sogar zum Headbangen ein. Der Titeltrack beginnt und erinnert mich etwas an LACUNA COIL, aber entpuppt sich dann zu einem lupenreinen Industrial-Kracher, der vor Wut nur so strotzt.
Richtig EBM-lastig kommt dann „I Am The One“ rüber, bevor ein derbes Riffing und übersteuerter Krächzgesang den Track zu einer extremen Version von einer RAMMSTEIN-Nummer werden lässt. Kommt gut. Wer dann nach dem elften Song die CD laufen lässt, der kommt noch in den Genuss eines Hidden Tracks, der nahtlos an die vorherigen Lieder anknüpft.

Metaller, die vor dominierenden elektronischen Klängen nicht zurückschrecken, sollten ruhig mal ein oder zwei Ohren riskieren. Ich find’s saumäßig geil, zumal die Produktion von „Tesla“ richtig kraftvoll ist. Und Repeat!

Warning, you are under attack. Please enter your personnal code. Voilà ce que prononce une voix mécanique, impuissante à masquer l’urgence de la sirène avec laquelle elle alterne. Puis un riff. Oppressant, métallique. Froid. Le premier morceau de Tesla donne tout de suite le ton : ici point de rédemption pour l’humanité. Tesla. Unité d’impulsion magnétique. Le premier album d’Herrschaft narre en effet la chute d’une humanité surprotégée et à son apogée qui ne résistera pas au manque d’électricité. En effet, le groupe nous narre la fin de cette humanité, dans un Metal industriel clinique et efficace, emmené par les froides guitares de Z[o]E et M[a]T et renforcé par les bruitages présents tout au long des morceaux. Morceaux calmes et tristes tels que “The Grand Architects”, auquel le scream de M[z]X donne une constance tragique, alternent avec des chansons plus enlevées, telles que “Valliant”, ou encore le clou de l’album, “I am the One”. L’ambiance est sale, oppressante. L’intro de “The Defenders” plonge l’auditeur dans une paranoïa qui renforce la puissance du riff délivré après. Si le procédé “sample effrayant+riff” peut sembler éculé, ou toutefois peu nouveau, Herrschaft le manie à merveille, et ce n’est pas l’envoûtante intro égyptisante du morceau éponyme qui me démentira.
La production n’est pas non plus en reste. Très froide et précise, elle donne un son industriel que ne renierait pas Rammstein, qui semble une des influences du groupe. Un excellent album, en somme, dans lequel surnagent quelques perles taillées pour le live, tels que “The Defenders”, “I am the One”, ou “Valliant”.
Une réussite qui, on l’espère, se confirmera pour le prochain opus, qui devrait sortir en 2012, le temps que les musiciens du groupe se mettent d’accord.
