HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ALBUMS

Yeah I like how not being familiar with other death metal bands makes you less of an Opeth fan
lol, actually he was referring to the band 'Death', who were a huge influence on Opeth. Also, he wasn't making fun of fans who aren't familiar with them, but rather telling that other guy that most fans aren't familiar with them. It wasn't an insult. Unfortunately, I have yet to really hear any, and I've collected every release in the related discography section of the Opeth site (except for the Death tribute, ironically enough, because it's not out yet). Yeah, it's pathetic, but by collect I mean 'download', not 'buy', haha. =P

Regardless, I think this proves that MOST Opeth fans have not heard Death.

Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Robbie Robertson - Self titled
Led Zeppelin III
Pink Floyd - Obscured by Clouds
Dredg - Catch Without Arms
Handel - Messiah
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream

How many albums do Dredg have and which would be the best one to get me into them?

I know he was referring to Death and that they are a death metal band...the reason I didn't like his post was because his comment seemed like it was derogatory to new Opeth fans, which I am. (he said something about how "all these kids" and I don't know who else that would refer to than the commonly-bitched-about metal kids that are recently getting into Opeth, are "far back and retarded in their metal 101 courses.")

I've never heard any songs by Death, but I'm familiar with Opeth's entire catalogue. Anyway that's why I took offense to that post. If my post doesn't make any sense (but I think it does) it's because I'm kind of delirious (I think I'm sick today)

3 and get El Cielo (their 2nd release). Don't touch CWA (3rd) unless you really like this kind of music. CWA is too polished and predictable. EL Cielo is great. its dredg btw. people here are wierd. I haven't heard the first. Anybody?...

edit - I've decided to get The Gathering Wilderness.

dredg's first one, Leitmotif, is MUCH more unpolished. The whole thing ALMOST flows as one big track - it's a very short album, with only 5 vocal songs and an instrumental between each one. The production is nowhere NEAR as good as their other two discs, nor are the vox. It's also more metal-based, and contains a few screams. It's a quirky but cool record. This one's concept is a man's journey for morality.

El Cielo is hands-down the best. It's just plain beautiful. It has vision, flow, good songwriting, and diversity and experimentation while still maintaining cohesiveness. Its concept is about sleep paralysis, and it's excellently executed. Get this one first.

Catch Without Arms is not as predictable and run of the mill as people say it is. It's a more rock-based record than El Cielo, and has some poppish songs that wouldn't have fit on any of their other records, but it's still a very emotional, powerful album that doesn't come across to me as being at all watered-down although it comes in a more accessible form. The focus on songwriting is very good here, and this album contains some of their best songs. The concept here is a bit more loose; it's about opposites, and is in two perspectives. It deals with all sorts of relationships.

They've only got 3. All three are good, but El Cielo is usually named as their best. Catch Without Arms is their most accessible, but for people on an Opeth board that's usually not an issue. CWA is my favorite but I haven't listened to the others near as much.

Glad you acknowledge it. :D And yes, I knew you were talking to Jude, but the quote button is there for a reason. Take your argument to a different thread or PM.

Regarding this thread: Music is subjective, and this is a thread about albums individual people recommend, not about 10/10 albums or what is good music. Therefore, this arguing should stop.

seriously? I have experienced sleep paralysis on two occasions. Hands-down the most freaked out I have ever been. I'll have to read the lyrics now...

Read the booklet as well. It's diary entries from various people describing their experiences in sleep paralysis. The lyrics are based upon these entries, and I think the final result is more universal, as the emotions portrayed through the lyrics can be applied to many things. I especially like the line the album ends on:

'A half of me is gone; the lonesome part is left. I cannot find the other half.'

I only physically own CWA. I'll definately buy that album now.

I physically own Leitmotif but not the others. I need to give El Cielo more listens, I've definitely listened to it by far the least.

My top 3 (4) favorite albums, so I always recommend them:

Opeth - Blackwater Park. To this day I find BWP the most complete album I know.

Grip Inc - The Power of Inner Strength. For a rock album, this one just flows for me, from beginning to end. Their latest album, Incorporated, I consider it's equal.

The Tea Party - Edges of Twilight. The middle eastern flair to this album is sweet.
