Hilarious things bands have asked/said to you

Btw I also had a drummer graduate from that institute who, in his fist guitar class with me, became furious about me trying to teach him scale patterns (he had no idea about them) saying he already had studied scales ''to the death'' his entire career and wanted to learn 'advanced' stuff instead.

Sounds like to me he probably knew the scales themselves note wise and not finger pattern wise on guitar.

He awkwardly made it clear to me he didn't want ANYTHING to do with scales.

I guess I could have taught him how to do air guitar.. but I don't do that myself.

I did lighting for a few venues in the city during my undergrad years. In one case, I had a friend who was part of avant guard band (like mounting guitars to plywood, beating the strings with mallets; rerouting circuit boards in children's toys, etc.). Before his act, he had asked me to make the lighting like a bad acid trip. We only had red and blue gels, so I did the best I could. I guess that's kind of weird :err:

Oh and once our vocalist said to me "We should record vocals in a bathroom, it'll sound awesome"

I just laughed and said fuck no.

If memory serves me right, Quorthon tracked his vocals in a bathroom.
Vikernes used to do it with a pc microphone.

Food for thought.

Aaron Dugan?

well yes, but that was a rebellion against the "good sound" most people were trying to archive. I wouldn't called that sound awesome in any case (the vocals might, the way they were recorded not)...

but on the other hand, I've listened back to the recordings I did with a PC mic (3 years ago when I started with recording stuff), thy certainly have that black metal flavor in them, I'm considering using them again for black metal of stuff...

yeah and our singer said that time: "why are you buying new 200€ condenser mic.. this 3€ PC mic is good enough..." The first 3 seconds he heard his voice trough the new one were also an natural answer on that question :-D

Dont forget about the infamous black metal amp settings: Bass: 0 Mid: 0 Treble: 10

The strangest project I had was a lady in her 40's I believe. She thought her husband was cheating on her so decided to put a recording device in a couch or something of that nature. she was convinced that during a part in the recording that she could hear things that were not even there. also should add that this recording was 6 hours long and I had 2 hours to listen to every second and clean up the "hiss" so that she had evidence of her cheating husband. I got lucky and found a part where the husband was talking to a woman for about 30 seconds, but was a muffled conversation at best.

But the part where I knew this was going to be a "fun" gig. was just before I started, after I agreed to do it for her. when she said "Its like CSI right? where you just strip out the unwanted sound and can hear everything." spent a good 30 min's trying to explain to her that CSI is a fictitious TV show and that no such device exists.

I felt sorry for the husband after the gig. And wouldn't blame him if he was cheating on her. I hope with a woman that had a better grip on reality.

@ Joey.coldweather - Oh shit. There is so much liability that could go with that.

I had a solo artist come in yesterday...
"I don't need to record bass. My amp covers all the lows, highs, and mids."
Amp of choice? Line6 Spider. Settings? Low: 10 Mid: 0 High: 9 (9 because 10 was too much)

Never heard "Send me the tracks we recorded so that I build up the bass/guitar tone at home, on my computer monitors. Then, I'll send them back to you and you will mix them with minimum changes..." ?

Is it me being too suspicious or bullshits ?

So much hate on bassists and drummers, haha. Here's a good guitarist one:

I was working with a deathcore band and it was guitar time, so the band sent in one of the guitarists (the band as a whole didn't want to be bothered checking out what was being recorded). The guitarists playing was so sloppy and to top it off he didn't even know all the parts, so I went out to the other guitarist (who turned out to be the songwriter and "better" player) and told him he needed to come track the parts. His response was "Aw, but I don't feel like recording." WTF? I was so surprised at his response. Got to listen to him bitch about recording while trying to salvage his crappy playing. I guess he just wanted to pay me for a place to hang with his friends.

"Remember the acoustic writing demos we did three years before the album you finished with us last year? We want to remix those and include them on an EP. You still have the tracks, right?"
