sorry, trying to decide whether to put this in the off-topic or equipment section, please move it if it's better suited to the off-topic section

as asked in the title, owning a home studio, how do your wives or girlfriends deal with your constant G.A.S? :tickled:

I don't live with my girlfriend just now, but she seems ok with it as long as I pay my bills n stuff first :)

When I told her I was planning on buy some API Preamps, she was like "wow, expensive"

Yeah, as long as the bills are paid then she is usually fine with it. But she does think I'm a bit insane for spending all that cash on stuff she doesn't get.

I only make one good upgrade per year and it usually pays for itself by the time I make the next one ... I also don't really have G.A.S and the stuff I get isn't super expensive

When I started doing projects outside my own band (and charging), my wife and I made the agreement that half of what I make doing projects goes back into my studio, the other half goes to back to us. This has allowed me to do the upgrades I want to do with each new project. It's worked!

My wife has said more than once "I don't know what any of that stuff is, you could buy all new gear and I'd never notice"
:D

Not that I *have* mind you... I've been up front about purchases, which are usually 3/4 paid for by a trade or selling something old to help finance it. Since I'm definitely a hobbyist in comparison to many here on the board, I'm not dropping $1k+ on new gear. What little money I've made recording other bands has gone into better mics, more stands and cables, etc.

I do the kansas city shuffle.

When I buy a new piece of gear, she randomly gets a new purse or something to keep her distracted long enough for me to hook it up and act like ive had it for a while.

The trick is to get enough stuff so that they can't tell when something new is added. Its only when you get new furniture for it that they notice.

these two techniques are awesome hahaha

Kansas City Shuffle! hah!
Usually I'm honest about what I'm going to spend. She cringes and figures out what new toy she can get as well. Kind of a modified KC shuffle.

my girlfriend couldn't see a difference between spending the money on gear and spending the money on video games

we aren't together anymore

The mere mention of buying something turns into an argument usually. :(

But I usually win the argument, so... :D

I have 3 kids and a house, so her thoughts are that I should invest any leftover money into the family / house - which I agree with, but... sometimes you gotta have what you gotta have. We've been together for over 15 years, so she can deal with it most times, thought she may not always like it ;)

My wife knew what she was getting into when we met, honesty from the outset, she wouldn't try and change and i wouldn't try to change her :)
Everything i get is paid for by me from the money i earn so she is cool with it.

Ya 2 kids and a house here too. I don't cut in to the normal savings program to buy, I just don't tell her about bonuses/stocks. Or like this last year, sold of a bunch of my motorcycle racing stuff, didn't recoup any money, but lots to spend on toys.
