I've been told that there are various techniques to execute floyd rose squeals in metal music, but I was just wondering what technique Alexi uses. Does he use the Dimebag technique of plucking the string with the left finger, then diving, then tapping the harmonic, then pulling out on the whammy bar?

Sorry if this post sounds ignorant, because it really is. I've never had a floyd rose before, but I just ordered the Alexi-600SE and I want to learn how to properly use my whammy bar.

Thanks.

Dude, you're gonna get reamed. But I'll answer your question, as I am in a good mood right now. I'm assuming you're referring to the dive bombs and skyrockets...well he just does a natural harmonic and either dives or pulls up with the whammy. The frets that work best are 3rd string - 2nd fret, pretty much any string on fret 7, I find that 3rd string 19th fret works really good, as well as 3rd string 15th fret. 2nd string - 3rd or 2nd fret works good for me too. It's pretty easy, juts play around to see where they sound best. You can of course also do more complex shizzle too, like striking the open 3rd string and then diving and tapping a natural harmonic some where along the string and pulling up. Just experiment really.

both. there's a bit in Hate Me! where he picks the natural harmonic then uses the whammy. however after the solo it's a flick & tap ("catch").

and ^^^. fuck off if you're going to be sanctimonious, k thanks. however, you probably should have posted this in the guitarplayer's thread.

Oh, I'm being sanctimonious am I? Right. Face it, he was going to get reamed up the ass for starting a new thread with a question like that. I've been here long enough to know that, and so I decided to respond before anyone could put him down and say z0mg wr0ng thr3d, FUCK j0099!!!!! I was not being self-righteous, although I can see how it may have come off like that.

j0tun, you didn't even answer the question.

Read..."Does he use the Dimebag technique of plucking the string with the left finger, then diving, then tapping the harmonic, then pulling out on the whammy bar?"

Not, "how does he do it".

The answer to the question is yes and no. I've seen Alexi perform these reverse divebombs by flicking the loose string with his left hand AND just simply picking it with his right.

"I've been told that there are various techniques to execute floyd rose squeals in metal music, but I was just wondering what technique Alexi uses."

Sounds fairly sensible to me. I've read questions much more stupid than that in the guitarplayers thread. I don't think it's fair to take it out on eveningninja just because most people on forums can't answer a simple question. I just realised that shredtastical beat me to it though.

Should I just learn to do both and do whichever one is easiest at the given moment while playing a riff?

This.

They can both sound the same if done right but most of the time, you'll hear the string being depressed and then flicked before the harmonic is played if you do it that way. You can get the harmonic straight away if you just pick it.

whahey, enough said, well done.

I disregarded it. The fact that he thanked me clearly indicated that he found the information of use, whether or not my response directly answered his question.

Makes sense. I suppose all that stuff isn't common sense to most people that are new to floating bridges so it's useful for them.

Btw, Alexi usually hits the G AND B string at the 5th fret to get his "signature" sound when doing those whammy bar things.
