Well Russ sure nailed him right. I was wondering how do you do those gruffy trademark vocal of his. I've tried several times and sounded like a third rate death-growl. :(

Blasphemy! Whats up with you blasphemers today? Just kiddin' :) ;)
Hmm, how to put clearly...
Remember that part from Fallen of V that goes like:
'my Serpents plot
the overthrow of your temple and shrines
In the night, my army rage and fury burning my shadow into the land - vengeance by my hand'
THAT part IS 100 % Dio.
So, maybe now you could help me :)

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Russel sounds like Dio and he himself admits being influenced by the rainbows and witches guy. Sure, he has alot of his own voice, especially that soul diva aproach of his, but saying he sounds nothing like Ronnie is denying the obvious. He can sound alot like Dio if he wants to, but I'm glad he's using more his own style lately.

And for the last time:
there is absolutely NOTHING wrong if someone is being comapared to Dio. After all, RJD still is still one of the greatest metal vocalists of all time, so that may be taken only as a compliment, not as disservice or an insult.
There. :)

I totally agree Demonspell. I don't hear Dio in Russell's voice (thankfully) and it drives me nuts to read this comparison is almost every review!

Honestly I can't remember Dio's voice but I remember that some time ago (a year I think) I heard a Dio song on TV and the first thing that got into my mind is ''fuck Russell sounds a lot like this guy  ''

@Dado-Is very difficult to mold your voice to sound like another person but try to sing from your gut, you know how to do growls?if so try to use your vocal chords a little bit and sing inwards (to make a raspy sound)

I gotta admit that it's difficult to explain this through the internet :o

I agree, make like you are going to growl  like some Deicide or something deep down in the stomach, not in the troat, but then sing :o instead of growl. Just practice..."Holy Diiiiva!"

I can emulate his voice pretty good, but it sounds kind of weak, because I don't know how to properly use my "head voice", this new phenomenon I have been hearing about here.
This is what I look like when I use my head voice.

  Agreed, i'm pretty damn good on growls (no brag :D ) I usually growl along Nile, Decapitated, Darkane and I learned to do the growls without using my throat. I'm going to change the file extension of the recording today and I hope it works *crosses fingers*

technically, you get the "Dio" effect by using a SLIGHT constriction of certain muscles of the throat while singing with an open technique. It sounds like a paradox, and it goes against what a lot of voice teachers will tell you, but that SLIGHT constriction of those muscles causes an area of the throat ABOVE the vocal chords to close off a little. This creates contact points in the throat that vibrate at a fairly low frequency to the passing sound coming from the chords. This adds a "rasp" to the already existing "open" sound coming from the vocal chords. Note that to do this correctly, the vocal chords themselves should not be affected.

The real trick is getting so relaxed at your overall vocal technique that you can do this rasp at any pitch. Darn you, Russ Allen! Darn you to heck!

anyway, be prepared to spend a lot of time with this. it doesn't come overnight to most people, and finding the right muscles in the throat and getting them to do your bidding is a personal, experimental process.

:bah: Bah this guy explained it a lot better than I did

:p

I totally agree, when you try to do the rasp sound you need to use your chords and it it won't do any damage on your chords or throat but on the other hand if you try to do growls (like Nile,Decapitated,The Berzerker) you can't use your vocal chords a lot since you can damage your voice. :spin:
