How does one sound like Dio?

I will... once I get a band...

I am doing some recordings once I get the right stuff for it, I'll let you know...

Dio voice is just singing using semi-ventricular voice. I could never have done it when I first heard Dio, I just imitated till I got it.

Practice is the best thing.

The only time that Russell could conceivably sound like he's channeling Dio is when he sings aggressively, otherwise his vocals bear little if any resemblance. Besides that, another reason why I take issue with the prevalence of that reference point, it implies that Russell is emulating him and adds to arguments that Symphony X are derivative.

Agreed 100 percent! Just play "Gypsy" and "Smoke And Mirrors" back to back and tell me they sound anything alike!

I'm not implying SymX music sounds anything like Dio, I only said that two vocalist sound alike (in a small measure, of course). Nothing else, really. Let's get this over with.
Anyway, thanks for the tip(s), SevenString, Ultimate Symphony, satanic rabbit.
:)

Russel's vocal style, especially when he tends to sing aggressively, is completely taken from Dio's book. Nuff said. And that is not a bad thing. I bet Russel would be the first to say he loves Dio's voice.

ALL bands are derivative to some degree. No one is 100% original. Its not an insult to say Russ sounds like Dio, to me its kind of a compliment since Dio is such a badass singer. Its like what Joe Stump told me once "people try to insult me by saying I sound like Yngwie. Well, I think Yngwie is an amazing player so if thats the worst thing people have to say about me then I guess Im doin ok" or something to that degree. Personally I think Romeo sounds a lot like you mushed together Jason Becker, Shawn Lane, and Yngwie, but it doesnt take away from how awsome I think he is. I still think he has his own distinct sound, as does russ even tho you can hear the influence from Dio in his voice.

I agree.......and awesome NP

As a side note, anyone interested in this "melodic rasp" style of vocal should check out early Vicious Rumors. The late, great Carl Albert had this style nailed. The albums in question are:

"Digital Dictator (Shrapnel)"
"Vicious Rumors (ST) (Atlantic)"
"Welcome to the Ball (Atlantic)"
"Live in Tokyo (Atlantic)"
"Word of Mouth (Brunette)"

Also, a cool link that has their discography and such:

For those not familiar with VR, they were very early on the wave of semi-progressive melodic hard metal. Great, hooky songs combined with (sometimes) thrash. Recommended.
