As are Gorguts and all of the old Death Metal scenes.

Gorguts is great, but I prefere their older stuff. 'Erosion Of Sanity' being their best album. From Wisdom to Hate is a great album though.

death metal as good or better.

Immolation:
Amorphis: tales from the thousand lakes, the karelian isthmus
Demigod: slumber of the sullen eyes
Brutality: screams of anguish, when the sky turns black
Adramelech: psychostasia
Atheist: unquestionable presence
Morbid Angel: blessed are the sick
Deceased:
Demilich: nespithe
Bolt Thrower: warmaster
Incantation- first 3
Therion: beyond sanctorum
Monstrosity: millenium
Oppressor: solstice of oppression
Sinister: cross the styx
Malevolent Creation: retribution,the ten commandments
Autopsy: mental funeral
Pestilence: comsuming impulse, testimony of the ancients
Wicked Innocence: omnipotence(very complex, expirimental for 95) gorguts was not doing stuff like this earlier.
Nocturnus:

Swedish death metal like Bloodbath,Edge of Sanity,Grave,Dismember,Entombed,Unleashed(not all albums)etc. is some of the best death metal. Before you through a hissy fit I do not even like black metal. Listen to how amazing, interesting the guitar harmonies in Bloodbath are. Great riffs solos also.

You're a loosing touch on what death metal is by thinking newer generation, expirimental death metal albums are better because they are more technicality,etc... . They do not capture the essence, atmosphere, in your face riffs of oldschool death metal bands.

Technicality does not also mean interesting or enjoyable music. Look at Hate Eternal,etc.. they're awful.

At The Gates is awful so avoid them.

I do have Obscura on my computer and I really like that song... however, I think there are death metal bands that are better like Hypocrisy, Unmoored, Cryptopsy, etc...

Idiotic as he seem for having mentioned Marduk, he's the only person here who's said Nihilist, so him > the rest of you plebs.

Gorguts are fantastic, but Incantation and Bolt Thrower are all I need

The Chasm, Arghoslent, Demilich, Adramelech, Infester. To name a few.

Wierd and technical does not necessarily mean better. Gorguts are still great, though. BTW, Obscura is my least favorite Gorguts CD. I know that was irrelevant, but I mentioned it because Obscura is viewed by many as their masterpiece.

That was a list of fantastic European death metal rather than Swedish alone, but yes, one can expect the standard Swedish sound to be quite dated and boring nowadays, as is all generic old-school stuff. The majority of the bands in my list have little that's "standard" about them, however.

Obscura is technically and compositionally the most advanced death metal album ever.

There are great bands out there as well, Demilich, The Chasm, etc. But their not on the same level. One listen to each of these bands should tell you that.

The only other album that I think rivals Obscura is Morbid Angel's Blessed are the Sick, which I think is the most complete death metal album of all time. But it rivals it in a different way. BATS has the same dark and evil riffs that Obscura has, but this album flows like a great story, almost like a concept album. Everything is perfectly placed, and the entire album sounds like one long song, with a brooding atmosphere that Obscura doesn't quite match.

I don't agree that Gorguts are the most advanced compositionally, it certainly isn't as obvious as you make out. I would claim that Burzum are easily the most advanced BM band compositionally for example - "complexity" in the sense one tends to mean when describing Gorguts is far from being the only factor. Nevertheless, they're strong in all areas, so Obscura is indeed easily top 10 material.

99.9% of death is boring and featureless, period. What's the arguement about?

99.9% of black metal is boring and featureless, fact.

It is if you've studied music. Basic music theory even.
