i guess you could call them hypocrites if they had claimed to be gentle and kind with women while raping them left and right at any given occasion. whereas they merely raped left and right at any given occasion.
however, i think aside from social and moral standards - that were indeed pretty lax back then - taking a stance against sexual violence is mostly a matter of sensitivity: if one gets his kicks from having sex with someone who fights back, well, i'd say let's toss him in a cell and throw away the key. after removing his private parts with a rusty knife. but maybe amongst pirates there were some who had enough sensitivity to refrain from such acts after all.
