Opeth will ALWAYS be on the outskirts of the mainstream...that is however, if they keep using growls. If the growls go altogether then its hello to the mainstream (maybe).
At any rate, Opeth come off to me as a band with more in common with King Crimson and Camel (in that they obtain a massive underground following without ever going completely mainstream). I think that Opeth are at the very very top of the underground right now, and thats where they are gonna stay. In the case of sudden mainstream popularity though they will (I hope) release that 'evil' album that Mikael said he had planned next and shock all those poppy muthafuckers. Imagine the looks on all the boppers faces when their favourite 'mainstream' group Opeth releases a crushing death metal album. That would rule...
