If you don't know the person who's selling you the turntable, throw away the old stylus (needle) and buy a new one. This is because you can't know how worn the stulys is.

Instead of replacing the old stylus you can also buy a whole new cartridge. Difference in prices between a new stylus and a new cartridge is very small. Personally I would recommend the Audio Technica 95E cartridge. It's cheap and very good, some say even as good as cartridges costing up to twice it's price.

I just replaced my old Sumiko Oyster with the 95E. They cost roughly the same, but the difference is like day and night. The Oyster is in a word terrible, so I'd suggest avoiding that one like the plague...
