I just listen to "The sound of perseverence"...

Yeah dude..+1 to the one who gave us +1 for giving props to symbolic :) Fuckin´love this album, too.

As I was a teenager, Spiritual Healing was (and is for me) AWESOME! The voice of chuck sounded for me like someone who gargles with nails and poison :D And the leads of James Murphy and Chuck Schuldiner was the best what I´ve heard in the death metal so far at this time.

SoP sounds like shit. I threw that shit away like 20 mins after I got it. Guess I was just sippin' on the Haterade too much that day...

Kronos - The Hellenic Terror
Decapited - Winds of Creation (scooped but fucking brutal) and Organic
Origin - too many of them are great

Death would be far down the list, probably not even on the list actually, for me. I don't consider them "death metal" for some reason.

Decapitated was the first band that I ever noticed during the solos the riffs underneath were more badass than a LOT of other band's main riffs, lol.

Symbolic is a fantastic album but is very polished compared to the previous albums, which is obviously expected. However, it exudes so much awesomeness it's spellbinding. No doubt, its probably the catchiest album of them all. My favourite would have to be Human (the brutal finesse of flattening of emotions is the work of legends) due to its lyrical themes, perfect sound at the time, Sean Reinert's drumming and just Chuck's colossal greatness.

However, I love all albums dearly and have to be some of my most prized possessions.

dude Organic Hallucinosis is my favorite too!!!!!!!!! except for covans wierd vocal style! that production was awesome tooo.

I felt the same way at first, but I really warmed up to his vocal style. No doubt Sauron is awesome, but Covan has an almost Napalm Death quality to his vocals that I really dig.

Oh and the tone on that album...\m/

Funny how so many people mention the Decapitated albums I don't have; no love for Nihility and especially The Negation on here? (The Negation to me is a much more solid album both song- and production-wise, but Nihility has the almighty SPHERES OF MADNESS :worship: )

Bro forget that for now, get "Human" at once! You said that you haven't heard much of it?? That is Death at their finest.

Marcus: Winds Of Creation is the prime example of Decapitated. I have all of their other releases, but I absolutely LOVE that album. My iPod playlist for the ride to and from work is every song from Kronos' Hellenic Terror and Decapitated's WoC in random order. All I do is pause it and turn it off when I get to work, turn it back on and hit play when I leave, etc, just picking up where I left off - every day lol. Makes the morning ride BR00TALz. :headbang:

Some more of my favs...

Aeon "Rise To Dominate"
Entombed "Left Hand Path"
Deicide "Once Upon The Cross"
Nile "In Their Darkened Shrines"
Dying Fetus "Destroy The Opposition"
Hate Eternal "Conquering the Throne"
Napalm Death "Harmony Corruption"

First Death record I got was Leprosy, bought solely on the basis of the cover, as you did when you were 15. Got me into the whole death metal scene. For years my favourite was spiritual healing, loved James on that one, my biggest sadness was when Death didn't turn up to a show in Wrexham when James was still with them. Over the years I shifted and though I like pretty mch everything Chuck did, I think that Human and Symobolic edge it for me now.

From that great era though
Obituary cause of death (more classic James in an already great band and one of the best live gigs from that time, Wrexham again)
Morbid Angel Blessed are the Sick (I liked Altars, but Blessed had more evil groove)
Entombed left hand path (and I love the raucousness of clandestine, particularly sinners bleed)
Deicide self titled - vocals taken to whole new level by Benton and great drumming
Pestilence - Consuming impulse and malleus mallefacerum, you want riffs......

shame so much of that stuff i had was on vinyl and i havent got access to a record player, needless to say my mum gets pretty fed up of 80s thrash and death metal when i go back to visit!

ITP has the most amazing drums/bass parts of any metal record ever, imho. Symbolic is the easiest listening of the three, and some of its songs are carved in history forever (1,000 eyes, symbolic, without judgment... etc) - but I remember buying TSOP and giving it the first spin, hearing my jaw drop to the floor and think "ok, so this is it. The record to end all records :D". That was a bit driven by the emotions of the moment, but still I can remember that day. Oh, and to get to track n°6 took me a couple of days, cause I kept on listening "flesh and the power it holds" over and over and over...

Chuck was still far from his sad passing, but you could already say that his sorrow and sadness were flowing thoughout the whole record.. While "Painkiller" did what usually can't be done: take a legendary song and make it DOZENS OF TIMES better. Something that just Chuck could do.

To sum it up, however, I could not choose a better record off the three - I'd take a bit here and a bit there.

And as soon as Muhammad Suicmez starts singing a bit higher than his deep growl, we'll welcome Necrophagist as the one and only heir to Chuck's legacy, I can bet my house on it.

ahah you're right bro! Symbolic has a more melodic feel. However if I have to pick one I choose ITP for just one simple reason...ANDY LA ROCQUE...I can sing all the solos on that album...the right note at the right moment!!

From SoP I personally would mention Voice of the soul as one of the greatest instrumental song ever.

Bella HWK :D

and I haven't heard much off of Human

:yow:

I will find you the tracklist on youtube only if you promise to buy it if you like it :p
And if you don't....well............:zombie::ill::cry:

Thought I'd save you the hassle and speed up your inclination to hear it all :)

It's a definite must-buy for any Death Metal fan.

And that bass drum kicks my ass any day.

i know, kinda old thread....still had to bumpt this for the sheer awesomeness that is THE SOUND OF PERSEVERANCE.

it was actually my very first death album, and by that time i felt it wasn't quite heavy enough for me.....stupid little kid, haha.

anyways, to me this is the very best metal album that was ever done. everything about it is perfect. i actually love the production. the individual elements aren't really the greatest (esp the rhythm guitars), but the whole thing fits just so well, and really creates the perfect vibe to carry the songs.
the best thing about it are the performances, though. be it vocals, guitars, drums, everything is played like the really MEAN it. this is not just a bunch of people trying to be all technical, and struggling to play their own riffs. this is technical, yet played with such passion and emotion....i feel that you can really hear and picture the guys playing their parts.

if anyone wanted me to name an album that i think which represents metal best, i would take the sound of perseverance.

so far, there has never been an album for me that gives me that same feeling....i'm in shock and awe everytime i put this into my cd player.

Still love for TSOP. Nice.

Started loving this album at 9 years old haha. Been headbanging to it ever since.

Spiritual Healing is definately my favorite Death album. I think that James' solos brought death to another level. The lyrics are also my favorite of all the Death albums. Am I the only one ?

Sound of Perseverance is fuckin awesome, but IMO 'Leprosy' is the best release ever made by Death.
If you ask me what the best death metal of all time is, I'd say "Alters of Madness". Hands down. Morbid Angel rapes.

Of course, my musical tastes aren't totally dependent on production.
