I just listen to "The sound of perseverence"...

Andy Laroque's solo on Overactive Imagination, PURE fucking ear candy. Hell, most Death solos are fucking mindblowingly killer.

AAAAA-FUCKING-MEN!!!!

That solo is in my top 5 along with the Trapped In A Corner lead from 2:02 onwards where it switches between G Phrygian and Db Lydian - smooooooth

My Death albums list

1: Symbolic / Individual Thought Patterns
2: The Sound Of Perseverance
3: Human
4: Spiritual Healing
5: Leprosy
6: Scream Bloody Gore

Yeh, but it ends in a way that is quite a bit of a turn off. I want more :kickass:

My favourite album is Suffocation`s Effigy. When you compare it to modern brutal stuff you realize how much it was ahead of it`s time.

Honestly, I've been going on a big Death binge (well, specifically Symbolic and TSoP) these past few weeks, and realized I much prefer the melodies and awesomeness of "Symbolic" - IMO Crystal Mountain destroys ANYTHING on TSoP in terms of groovy riffs that I can really get into, rather than what I now perceive as a lot of really annoying blatant attempts to attempt to be prog on TSoP, with all the different song sections, tons of atonal licks, and seeming absence of any time signature in certain spots (e.g. Spirit Crusher right before that awesome break); I still dig it, but I now realize how immature it feels to me writing wise compared with Symbolic

Also, Richard Christy is a great drummer, but his style is just too off the wall for me. His fills just are too "rushed" and "random" sounding to me.

-Joe

I remember playing a gig in Tampa back in like '96 or '97 and Richard Christy's old band Burning Inside also played. I remember him reminding me of Sean Reinert. Same kinda hair, drums, even had a keyboard setup behind him... The first thing I asked him was "You're a Sean fan aren't you?" and he immediately said "YES!!!!" lol
Who woulda thought he would eventually play in Chuck's last Death album? :)

Symbolic, Tsop and Itp has the same quality level (galactic) IMO. Preferences are a matter of personal taste. What album has THE certain atmosphere for someone personally. This is very personal, very intimate. Difficult to debating about, I think. Under the line ALL 3 are masterpieces and Human was pathbreaking, exactly like Spiritual Healing at the old days.

It makes me sad, that we´ll never hear a new Death Album in our lifetime :(

interesting....i feel that symbolic overall doesn't give me as much of a feeling as TSOP does. part of it is the production....i'm not a big fan of symbolic's sound. bass sounds great (but sorta buried), drums and vox especially are leagues behind the quality of tsop as far as i am concerned. i dunno, maybe with a killer production like tsop i'd get into symbolic a bit more.
i also feel that tsop is a stellar album when it comes to songwriting quality, whereas with symbolic things are a bit more predictable i guess.
but then again, it's a matter of taste :)

btw, it's interesting that there's no band out there that - within that style - get's close to what death were doing earlier. there's stuff like decrepit birth who i guess take the approach and run with it as far as they can, but their songs are more of a wankfest at times, as opposed to the death ones being sort of technical yet very well written and enjoyable as SONGS rather than just difficult riffs and stuff.
the only band i know that kinda has the death vibe is crystalic (scandinavian band i think, check them out!), but once again, the songwriting quality just isn't *really* there.
death was a band that could perform the weirdest riff changes, yet make the transitions seem logical and even smooth.

My favorite Death album is 'Human' for legendary songs & riffing :headbang:

My all time favorite death-metal albums (the better the riffs, the better the album, heh!)

1 - Carcass: Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious
2 - Carcass: Heartwork
3 - Entombed: Left Hand Path
4 - Bolt Thrower: ...For Victory
5 - Dismember: Like An Ever Flowing Stream
6 - Death: Human
7 - Sepultura: Beneath The Remains

I prefer Symbolic to TSOP, but as Felix pointed out, that's merely a matter of personal preference, I wouldn't say one is better than the other.
Symbolic was the album that got me into Death, also I learned half of the songs of that album before joining my first band to be prepared for playing death metal. Got the job, thank you Chuck!

@Fragle: Do you know Illogicist? That band always comes to my mind when speaking of the "Death vibe"...

And then there's Exposed Guts, you can totally tell their guitarist/singer is a big Chuck Schuldiner fan:

I don't listen to Death as much as I should, but my favourite and the one I've listened to the most is definitely TSoP.

Winds of Creation and Organic Hallucinosis are some of my absolute favourite death metal albums ever, but I do enjoy everything else by Decapitated immensely (including The First Damned). I think their riffs are some of the best I have ever heard - and will ever hear, and their production is just great (obviously on OH...the guitar tone and drum sounds are just amazing).

I love Behemoth immensely as well, and I think I am one of the fewer people who likes The Apostasy more the Demigod, but whatever...they are both fantastic. I just love the tones, and the energy, and the compositions so much. Everything is fantastic!

I'm also a big Cannibal Corpse fan, but I don't love them as much as the 2 bands I've just mentioned.

Has anyone seen this: http://www.chuck-schuldiner.org/

Interesting stuff - his family has created a fanclub with a membership fee that in their own words:

will be used to finally produce Chuck’s never before released last music, which he was able to record in the studio. In addition, Members are also encouraged to vote in a fan based selection of a collection of Chuck’s greatest hits, sponsored by www.EmptyWords.org, to be included on the “When Man and Machine Collide” (Titled by Chuck) CD.

Plus they are using it ias an essay contest about Chuck in which the prizes will include:

• Grand Prize for the giveaway is Chuck’s Personal Guitar, a BC Rich custom handmade Mockingbird.
• Second Place is the “Death Stage Backdrop” used by Chuck/Death while touring internationally.
• Third Place is a Replica of Chuck's “Stealth Guitar”, made by BC Rich/Hanser music group (this is a replica of the same Stealth guitar Chuck played on tour).
• Fourth Place will receive a set of Guitar Pick-Ups by DiMarzio Pick-Ups/USA, the same type used by Chuck when touring.

I want Chuck's BC Rich Mockingbird - have to start writing :)

Ever heard Atheist dude? Not the same, obviously, but similar IMO!

And as to the first part, yeah, taste differences indeed, so that's cool (but I personally really like the production on Symbolic, the guitars aren't as full but also aren't as gratingly harsh and solid-state-sounding as on TSoP)

 (well, production-wise, musically they're separate but equal, Jim Crow-style  )

Yeh I just like the sound of the Apostasy a lot more...the vocals don't have that double track thing going on the whole time, and I really like the drum sound, plus I find a lot of the songs more enjoyable.

This is a very close ordeal though, I mean...both of them are some of my favourite CD's ever.

It's good to hear Fans/Friends are still buying Death's works. According to the Labels, Century Media/California and Nuclear Blast,/Germany NOBODY is or has been buying any of Death's stuff!
I am Beth, Chuck's sister. This is EXACTLY why NO LABEL will be entrusted to release the last work of Chuck, Shannon, Steve, Richard & Tim as Control Denied! We are getting together the funds ourselves to get the Band together, FINISH, pay the Artists/Band Members, any studio time to finish, etc. My son, Chris Steele, Chuck's nephew, donated Chuck's Guitar & Marshasll amps to the cause. Mom is still trying to find Tim Aymar, so if anyone knows how to contact him, please let us know. Mom's email (Jane Schuldiner) is njbschuldiner@yahoo.com, mine is bethlevine45@gmail.com. Mom is in the process of contacting Steve & Shannon. Also, Richard Christy is aware & excited about this project/www.chuck-schuldiner.org. Feel free to email any of us & Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Beth Schuldiner
