There was barely any talk of this album here.

I know not a lot of RC regulars dig brutal death metal, but the "stars" that comprise this band surely make it worth a looksee, no?

And I'm no Hypocrisy expert by any stretch, but has Tagtren's vocals EVER sounded this fucking gnarly?

This is "brutal" death metal? :erk:

It's not? I mean, sure it's not Nile, but it's certainly not Arch Enemy. I would think their continued early '90s style still constitutes it being called brutal death metal. Take out the brutal if you'll sleep better tonight.

 I just don't think they fit into the term, nor do Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, etc. I mean, death metal is brutal per definition, but this is not Immolation Suffocation Decapitated Liturgy we are talking about here. Surely Henrik will back me up on this!

Arch Enemy, since you mentioned them, is not death metal at all and I don't really think they ever were

I was going to edit my post with followup, but then my phone rang.

The reason I don't like it?

the album is pointless, imo it doesn't have any of the magic that the first album had.. which many agree doesn't have that special touch that the EP had.. (which I do think carries over into the first album)

It's all about the sound, yeah they were ripping off that old swedish DM sound, but it was done so awesomely..

then they did their second album, and came out with something bland.. nothing makes it stand out.

I'd put it right there with Immolation, maybe Suffocation. Don't know Liturgy, and Decapitated is far more US-styled IMO, i.e. technical death metal.

It's all "brutal" as far as I'm concerned.

Cool, at least you have reasons. ;)

I'm pretty much digging the fuck out of it though.

The song "Eaten" is awesome, thats about all that stood out on the album for me. Not bad, just not something I was compelled to listen to very much I suppose.

OK. I'd sooner call Bloodbath melodic DM than brutal, but hey whatever.

Also I like namedropping Liturgy because they're the most ridiculously over the top DM band I've ever heard

I should also admit I don't like death metal at all, outside of bands like Grave, old Entombed, which maybe gives credence to my liking of Bloodbath sans the new album.

Yeah, I'm with Erik on this. Bloodbath is probably closer to melodic DM than brutal DM, but I'd just call them death metal, no "prefix" needed here. Bands such as Morbid Angel, Obituary, Bloodbath etc. are just regular DM, neither melodic nor brutal.

Not too keen on Bloodbath myself, markgugs! I like a couple of tracks from their first couple of releases, but that's about it.

 I see you're playing "Scars Of The Saints" now, it makes me feel all soft and fuzzy inside.

Haha..."oompa loompa" is now in the RC dictionary. :tickled:

Re: Bloodbath, I prefer the previous (mostly thanks to Akerfeldt to be honest). I gave the new one a couple of spins but meh, it's ok. Same with new Hypocrisy. Just can't deal with straight up DM anymore -- either that or I just need an extended break.

EDIT: And didn't Swano shift from guitars to drums or something?

Other way around Ali, he drummed on the last one, moved to guitar on this one. BOTH reasons are why I'm enjoying this new(er) one so much.

1) Dual guitars, much deeper, more riff-tastic approach IMO.

2) Martin Axenrot (Satanic Slaughter, Witchery) took over as the drummer, and he's quickly becoming a favorite of mine (he filled in on Opeth's recent tour too).

also, when I listen to RTC.. I basically only listen to the guitar

man!! that guitar tone.. I freakin' love it, the guitar alone makes that album what it is for me.

Yeah I think it all came down to the vocals for me. I'm not as big a fan of Tagtgren (as compared to Akerfeldt, say), although I totally worship "The Final Chapter".
