I thought i'd post this here, since Symphony x fans im guessing also like iced earth? and i gotta say i love the new song, but the rerecorded version of the Trilogy is not as good but still pretty decent.

TTS is good...not brilliant, but I like it. As for the trilogy...I really dig it...has a cool vibe. It's a fresh take with some nice nuances/different elements. I would say the original is more powerful...and this is "sleeker" for lack of a better term...and more atmospheric. As for the vocals, Barlow is more emotional, but that's always been his strength...Tim could use a bit more, but overall his vocals go well with the different mood on this version. Which do I prefer...probably the original, but this one is fun :)

I thought the new song, as well as the re-recorded trilogy, were absolutely horrible. The recording sounds flat, robotic, and unemotional. I listened to the original trilogy again, and to me it is 100% superior. Ripper's voice has no depth, and I really believe he doesn't fit with this band.

Thank you for saying that so i don't have to type it. 100% correct.

I'll just add that the new song's verse sounds far too reminiscent of declaration day.

Oh holy shit, red baron SUCKED!!!! That and greenface were like the worst songs on that disc.

Declaration day, Atilla, Waterloo, and parts of gettysburg were the only things even partially worth the plastic they were printed on.

What's everybody's opinions on When The Eagle Cries? I think it's a good song (as a ballad it is at least), but lyrically, they really just didn't capture the true gravity of the emotion and pain of that day, especially since it was so recently. It sounds more like they wrote about something that happened years and years ago. (as in many decades ago) I'm actually about ready to write a full essay on why the lyrics of that song were an epic failure, but I have other shit to do right now. It's still a great song, but just the lyrics don't do it at all.

And coming from me, that's saying alot. You don't fuck with me about the gravity of what that song is about.

Hmm.. When the Eagle Cries, isn't the opening lyrics to that one something like: "Another day just like any other." Sounds weird somehow.

Anyway, Ripper is cool. Barlow's probably the superior but until I've heard this new stuff I can't really tell. Btw, am I the only one who thinks the production-quality on TGB is crappy as hell?

EDIT: Shit, just heard the new stuff... and it's AWESOME! Ten Thousand Strong was great and the re-recording was just incredible. Just epic and cool throughout. Great production too. I've never bought a single in my entire life but I'll sure as hell buy this. Love the artwork!

I think it sounds whiny and annoying and I always skip it. terrible chorus. Actually the only good songs on the grloious burden, imo, is High Water Mark. and not because it's a good "iced earth song", because it's a decent song on its own.

ditto

As for the Eagle Cries...the acoustic version is much better IMO...good ballad, even though the lyrics can come across a tad cheesy. I wonder if the new album will feature any "rough" vocals like on Attila (interplay between clean Roman vox and rough Attila vox)...and did Tim do those? I don't remember Jon being credited with any vocals on the album. Actually, Jon SHOULD put down some vox on the new stuff...he sounds cool on Stormrider

he sang on that song??? that's my 2nd favorite iced earth song, after prophecy (the original)!

Jon is also good on the ghettysburg whatever shit on The Glorious Burden, which are the only decent tracks on that album.

i don't know if i'm looking forward to this or not... i don't think tim owens is aweful, he clearly is atleast very technically advanced, but he just isn't right all all for iced earth. barlow is one of my favorite metal singers, but the lack of his voice really isn't what brings TGB down for me... some of the riffs are cool and whatnot, but the lyrics across the whole album just plain sucked. I don't think the IE guys have any experience in writing about anything but blood guts and devil evil shit until TGB. so when suddenly they have to try to envoke a little bit of history, they didn't have a clue.

I hope they don't do a Manowar and fill the albums with excessive interludes. Stuff like that can make an otherwise cool metal album lose it's drive. Anyway if the rest of the album is as good as Ten Thousand strong I'm going to love it.
