If somebody wanted to discover metal, which 5 albums would you recommend?

I would probably start them off with the some foundations of metal

Iron Maiden- Powerslave
Judas Priest- Stained Glass
Manowar- Triumph of Steel/Hail to England
Virgin Steele- Guardians of the Flame
Metallica- Ride the Lightening/Master of Puppets

To someone who has never heard metal before I think even music with agressive vocals would come as too much of a shock.

...Dimmu is still pretty extreme for a n00b, IMO.

Well that Dimmu album was what got me into black metal (albeit not metal as a genre, that was metallica) and back then I was not at all familiar with extreme metal. I've sent Mourning Palace to some of my non-metal friends since it's such a hit, and they thought it was pretty decent. But perhaps I was more susceptible since I have the feeling that metal is my musical destiny and it would not appeal so much to those lacking a clear path to metäl ;)

Seeing as the choices would have to be pretty melodic and stuff, I'd probably go with something like this:

Metallica - S&M
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Dark Tranquillity - Projector (for their growling needs)
Blind Guardian - Imaginations from the Other Side
Candlemass - Ancient Dreams (the titletrack is pretty damn catchy!)

Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Immolation - Close to a World below

Seriously though, some modern day dudes posing with swords, dressed in loincloths, and actually taking themselves seriously is the fucking epitome of Poserdome.

GTFOH with that nonsense.

but surely you agree that the first three or four albums are unfuckwithable though
