Listening to this for the first time in a long time. This is really not all that good. It's not horrible, but it's no At the Heart of Winter and certainly no Blizzard Beasts or Pure Holocaust.

Thought I'd share, because I'm cool like dat.

This was my first "black metal" album so I guess I have a little bit of a soft spot for it.

Since I've been procrastinating studying all day, I don't think it will hurt to procrastinate for one more hour to listen to this again.

Tyrants is the obvious best song. This is almost like rock n' roll black metal.

I'm glad my first Immortal was PH and ATHOW.

"Damned in Black" kicked some sweet ass too. "SOND" didn't really go downhill from there stylewise, but the songs just lost inspiration, they started repeating the best parts over and over again, and the best parts on "SOND" < the average parts on "ATHOW". Simply put, just my take.

Sons of Northern Darkness is a pretty cool album. Damned in Black was good, but it just didn't seem right to me- it was hard to find a will to listen to it more than once.

I agree, though I like "One by One" a lot too. I wish I had more Immortal. All I own is Damned in Black and Sons of Northern Darkness.

This album aint bad at all - just turn it up and let it go. The material sounds much better live. Man, when they played Tyrants live at the Metal Gods tour, it was like being pummeled in by a wall of chunky riffs shooting 3 foot icicles into your eyeballs.

I like it. It was also my first Immortal album, but I don't really hold a soft spot for Immortal in general so I don't for this album either.

Damn straight! When they started playing the title track live during Inferno '03, I went like this: :worship: :kickass:

Anyways, I like the album. It's certainly no "At the Heart of Winter", but I'd say it's about a notch or two over "Damned in Black". It's useless to compare to the older stuff, 'cause it's like two different bands. "Within the Dark Mind" is the best song.

I think "Sons Of Northern Darkness" is pretty crappy, to be honest. The only GOOD song is the title track (esp. the killer intro). Never understood why so many people dislike "Damned In Black", I think it's a very enjoyable listen.

"At The Heart Of Winter" and "Pure Holocaust" are easily their best.

I'd say the first three songs of SoND are some of my favourite metal minutes, but after those it looses some speed and becomes only very good. The Abyss production makes those insanely heavy riffs even more so and always makes my head shake in an uncontolled manner.

Of the other albums of theirs that I've heard I'd rank them something along the lines of:

1.AtHoW
2.
3.
4.
[...]
~12. DiB

Conclusions: DiB is a snooze fest and I really need to hear more Immortal
