Abbath thinks the next Immortal will be a comeback to roots.

well, most BM purists will say that Pure Holocaust is their best album.

So what? Most BM purists would probably say 'Nattens Madrigal' is Ulver's best album. But that doesn't mean it's the most popular, since there are a lot more non-BM purists out there than BM purists. Immortal only became really popular when they harnessed the crossover appeal.

I hear what you're saying here, but it's the exact same thing that Emperor did last year, obviously the promoter for the shows is the same. It's not like Abbath came up with the idea or anything.

Presumably it's more like the same booking agent, since all three Emperor shows this time around (NY, Chicago, LA), as well as both Immortal shows have the same pricing structure. It'll be interesting to see if any other bands follow the same pattern.

Really? Looks like I need to track that one down.

Yeah, "booking agent" is definitely the concept I was going for there as all three shows would obviously be promoted separately. I've got too many one-off festivals on the brain and hence "promoter" is the first term that pops into my mind.

heh...well, that wasn't exactly my intention! I think 'Nattens Madrigal' is Ulver's worst album, but that's because I'm not a "black metal purist". Since it's Ulver's only "pure" black metal album, I figure that it's the only one a "pure" black metal fan would like, by default. Just as 'Kveldssanger' would be the favorite album of "acoustic folk purists", and 'Themes...' would be the favorite of William Blake fanboys.

But yeah, people who like blast-in-the-face, ear-bleeding black metal with no frequencies below 1kHz seem to dig this album, so if that sounds good to you...

Gotcha. Based on that, I'll probably end up not revising my opinion that "Bergtatt" is the gem of their catalogue.

Meh... I suppose I'd be interested in checking it out at least, but it's certainly sounding less appealing by the minute.

Hmmm...really torn on new Immortal material. Their last couple of records did nothing for me. They were good, but I could care less. I still listen to Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, Pure Holocaust, and Battle In The North. BLizzard Beasts is the most recent that I actually own. All the others were sold and kept as cdr copies.

Do that, it's the second best album ever.

Hey fotmbm, wassup? :tickled: [/sherlock]

Jason -- you bought Bergtatt and stopped at chapter one of the trilogy? I think the theory is that Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, and Nattens all act as accompanying pieces, although each represent a different 'soundscape'.

Bergtatt is the best IMO, but they're all so different.

I would feel odd if I didn't own Kveldssanger and Nattens in my collection. The trilogy is otherwise incomplete.

Yeah, that's pretty much why I have it. I like the *idea* of the album (which comes off as an even stronger statement given the path they took after it), but it's kind of painful to actually listen to. I figure that someday I could really learn to love it, but I just don't feel like putting in that time and effort right now.

Oh, and 'Perdition City' is their best one anyhow.

Immortal!!! Blashrykh!!! Grrrr!!!

So back to Immortal then....lot's of conflicting opinions here on old vs new Immortal.

If you can, rank the albums in order of preference.

For me, based on which albums I listen to the most, I would go with
- Pure Holocaust
- At the Heart of Winter

After that, it would be

- Diabolical Fullmoon
- Sons of Northern Darkness

Not familiar enough yet with the other albums.

I do know that Battles in the North is probably my least fave.

To reveal yet another layer of my dorkdom, my play counts over the last 3(?) years:

At The Heart Of Winter - 7.2
Damned In Black - 5.9
Sons Of Northern Darkness - 5.1
Pure Holocaust - 2.5
Blizzard Beasts - 1.0
Battles In The North - 0.2

Yeah, that reflects my overall opinion pretty well.
