IN FLAMES Clayman Re-recorded 2020

Well, if you have decided that you.make the music, and Anders the vocals, and then a solo is taking away without first asking yourself then that means that you don't have that big control on what's released.

I.remember Jesper saying that the album was best than people says. And you say that it sounds better live. So he may be talking about the album as it was released or he might be talking about the songs.

But Jesper also said that House is a great song, so he might not be the best person to judge this kind of things.

Probably not, but I think if he was disappointed in the album mix he probably would have said something by now, especially if Anders was the cause. Chances are they all agreed on the sound, which maybe isn't a surprise as they have made a lot of questionable production choices after they left Nordstrom.

I don't think Anders was the cause. Sometimes, you sent the album to the people that must mix it and the result is shit.

In the end, the sound is amateurish. Not something an experienced band would come with.

Of the 8 albums they've released since Clayman I would say only 3 have been mastered to a decent level (CC, SOAPF, ITM). The other 5 all have some fairly obvious flaws, although ASOP and SC are the worst by far.

They are. Though I think that ASOP is the worst because I can see the intention behind the master of SC. They tried, though failed, to give it some kind of a classic studio sound.

I must say that the one that I dislike the most is Battles. Not only because I don't like that album. Is also that it sounds flat. And some parts are just poorly mixed. At least, when talking about ASOP, all of the final mix is equally bad.

Battles is just hollow in every way, including production. At least ASOP has some artistic merit as there are some good songs in there. Battles has nothing. Every song is shallow and pointless, so in that sense you could say the production is spot on as it matches the output.

Interesting. I hadn't heard of any beef between Peter and Anders - maybe Anders didn't like that Peter went straight over to Cyhra with Jesper after he left In Flames. Peter's departure was very sudden, I don't think anyone saw it coming.
Peter left for the same reasons Daniel did though, didn't want to do the heavy touring and be away from his family anymore. Cyhra was never going to be a big touring band so I think that's the reason he joined it at first, but I mean considering he only stayed in the band for 1 year I guess he doesn't think touring is worth it anymore.
Fear is the weakness has to be the most disappointing IF track ever. It starts off with that cool mix of a lead guitar and electronic synth in the background, sounds kind of moody and melancholic, almost like a sequel to My Sweet Shadow, it has a bit of that STYE atmosphere. And then the whiny verses starts and everything falls apart. Talk about wasted potential.
I think FITW is one of their best songs during the last like 15 years lol. Very good intro, I love the verse riff especially. It's just a good catchy song imo, along with Where the Dead Ships Dwell and A New Dawn it's in my top3 of SOAPF.

Also, whoever talked talked about ASOP and SOAPF production, weird part is it's the same people behind both albums (apart from Jesper obviously). SOAPF imo has perfect production for it's sound.

Lastly, Dead Eternity is by FAR the best song on TJR, don't come here and argue about December Flower solo or Moonshield.

That is strange - perhaps they learned from their mistakes on ASOP? Or they just knew they were going for a different sound and made changes accordingly.

The title track is probably my favourite. It sounds incredible live as well (it was part of a medley they played at the show I went to in 2010). A real shame they don't play it more often. Dead Eternity is fantastic as well though.

Asop was produced by IF and Roberto Laghi produced the bass and maybe the drums. Don't know who did the mixing.

Soapf was produced by Roberto Laghi. Once again, I don't know who did the mixing.

And I vote for moonshield.

And yes, Daniel Bergstrand as the habitual producer of Anders vocals.

You sure? I cant be bothered to check right now but I'm pretty sure Roberto Laghi was doing guitars with Björn & Jesper on ASOP studio diaries?

Also Toby Wright mixed ASOP.
Roberto Laghi recorded & mixed SOAPF with assistance from Anders & some Hans dude.

Don't worry, they were duly dealt with.

Good, good.

Atoma was for my taste a little bit too slow paced and gothic in feel with guitars being of almost auxiliary importance, with keyboards and vocals taking the spotlight. If I remember right, that album was mostly written by the band's drummer and keys player so it makes sense. Hopefully this line up change makes them go back to being a guitar-oriented melodeath band again.

I wasn't a huge fan of Atoma until I saw them touring for the record with Amorphis and Omnium Gatherum. They only played a few tracks from it but it was enough for me to go back and give the album a fair shake. Is it my favorite DT album? No, but I do think it's pretty good for what it is. The title track was really good live. That being said, I would love a return to form on the next album, although I think they've strayed way less from their original path than In Flames has.

Maybe you're right and, though they hired him to produce the bass and drums he ended helping with guitars too. I should watch the documentary but I won't :D.

I still think that the mixing has a bigger effect in what can be heard than people expects.

I wonder if that was just to make up for his earlier drunken outbursts. :D

I mean, there are twelve songs on that album and out of all those House becomes his object of praise.
That's what I though. Like he was trying to redeem himself.

Producer will always have a bigger influence then whoever mixes the record. If you set up an amp so that the guitar tone sounds like utter garbage, I can't really rectify that in the mix later. I can only adjust so that garbage is more or less prominent among other things that need to be heard. Producer also almost always affects songs and arrangements on the spot and, in metal, serves like someone to bounce ideas and opinions to and from. Good producer is worth his weight in gold because he is supposed to be a neutral third party without a horse in the race. Anders has a problem that he has been using the same producer for years and the guy is not only a friend but also knows which buttons not to push. When a producer becomes a yes-man, he also becomes useless.

Yeah I also saw them in 2018 when they were promoting it. They were pretty good live. Stanne is pure class and probably both my favorite singer and lyricist in metal. I'm only annoyed that I didn't get to see them earlier with the classic line up. Much like how when I got to see In Flames in 2009 Jesper was already out. Goddamn I just realized he's been out for over a decade.
I agree, they strayed less. It's still quality, unlike modern IF. I just prefer the riff-driven DT. I see Atoma like a sequel to Haven. Both are moody, atmospheric, very gothic and keyboards are at the forefront.
I loved Construct thoroughly however.

I've seen bands enough complaining about the final mix for their albums. Of course, you're right about the producers helping with the amps and shit.

Anders has a problem that he has been using the same producer for years and the guy is not only a friend but also knows which buttons not to push. When a producer becomes a yes-man, he also becomes useless.
Last album he was with Daniel Bergstrand was SC. And, just my opinion, their only common failure was ASOP and SC. For the rest of the albums they did a great job.

Yeah credits did but Razzia Records who distributed the albums had additional info of the credits/personell of the album on their website :p

I still really want to hear that unreleased song from ASOP that parts could be heard in the documentary
