Industrial metal: Metal or not metal?

Often I hear that industrial metal is too commercialized to be a real true metal genre by metal purists. Industrial metal is basically metal with elements of industrial music, just like how folk metal uses elements of folk music.

What about you, do you think industrial is among the genres for metalheads or is it just music for industrial fans that like thrashy riffs?

It depends on how strong the metal element is. For example, it used to be that Ministry wasn't accepted into Metal-archives, but later on they revised that stance based on some of their later work.

There's no black and white. Some bands are obviously metal in the industrial genre and others aren't.
Slipknot used rap in their music, they were/are still a metal band - although not necessarily a good one.

Personally, I think Godflesh and Fear Factory are among the greatest examples of industrial metal bands that are accepted as metal.

Ministry started incorperating guitar in their music, but I never really thought at anytime it was metal. Godflesh-steetcleaner,pure,selfless,Pitchshifter-industrial,Fear Factory-Demanufacture are indeed metal. And Industrial. FF guitarist Dino is a metallic/extreme guitarist and listened to different forms of metal. All these albums sound very industrial to me.

It is a resounding NO and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know anything about industrial music.

There are VERY few metal bands that have ACTUAL industrial influence - Godflesh and PHOBOS are the only two that actually come to mind.

I really hate threads like this. "Purists" pick and choose what they want to be "metal." You're going to tell me someone wailing + indecipherable guitars + symphonics is metal, but Disturbed (even if we disregard everything but their last two albums) isnt playing heavy metal? It's retarded.

If metal doesnt like your image, you arent metal, regardless of the music itself. That being said, it really doesnt matter if something is metal or not. It's not like it's some exclusive club or something.

I think the issue here isn't if bands like Ministry are metal or not (and I don't care one way or another, their synthpop is their only good material), but if the bands most commonly referred to as industrial metal have any degree of influence from actual industrial music.

Ministry is obviously not metal. Neither is Godflesh. They're doing their own thing and should be respected on those grounds. Originally, both bands disclaimed metal.
