So i wanna spend some money on a guitar simulator plug in but im not sure what to go with, my budget is about £100

Ive tried demo versions of amplitude and thought it was ok but id like to know what are the must haves in guitar amp plug ins.

For a free option, I'd second Wagner Sharp. You can get some really GREAT tones from it with the right impulses. As you should know Jhakwe, with those tones on your earlier stuff!

Line 6 POD Farm.

The thing about Revalver is that it's in denial of being a software simulation. It tries to be a real amp so hard that all you can hear in the end is how it's sub par to the real thing. POD Farm embraces the digital nature of its tone and will give you something quite usable if you know your way around some EQ tweaking. That's just my take on things after many years of listening to people fiddle with all kinds of simulation software here. If I had to do a production with a sim, I'd be using Line 6.

+1

I have only used Revalver in demo mode, but to me it has too many options for something like this. With the pod, its simple. I'm not saying the pod gives better tones, but I feel like I achieve very similar tones with both (one having a lot more variables than the other).

Revalver III seems to be the favorite over here but I've got nice sounds out of that and Guitar Rig 3, Amplitube & Amplitube Metal.

I suggest you download the demos and have a play around before making any decisions.

I'd go with Revalver MKIII, but if you are on a budget, there are some cheaper Gearbox/Podfarm packages that sound good also. Revalver also has the cheaper HP version which has only the Peavey sims and is only $69! Also you can't tweak the internals of the amp like you can with the full version.

As for industry standard, the Pod series is it. Professionals in metal actually have replaced real mic'ing with PodXTs (joeymusicguy for 3 years apparently) and have gotten great results. Even Jens Bogren, who is very picky about his sounds, has used Pod stuff on his recordings (although feels guilty for it ). It's funny that even the top people in the industry have to apologize for using amp sims when they're the ones who define the tones most of us strive for.

Haha, yeah, I think it's best to post the exact quote for that one, so people can judge for themselves :D

To be honest i can't remember what amps we used, i know it was one Mesa double Rectifier, but i must get back and... Oh no!!! Never ment to give this away, but the secondary pair was actually a POD XT with the (at the time new) Metal Pack! I see a shit storm coming this way. :) I remember now that i did regret it in the mix, and it's mostly the Mesa you will hear.

(talking about the guitar tone on Opeth's "Ghost Reveries")

go wagner plus impulses....totally free and will sound great or bettern than the others mentioned, save the money to buy something else

Sorry for the slight OT, I saw a video where both Opeths guitarists were using a Boss GT6 or GT8, with their guitar tech telling that their distortion sound were coming from those… I find it hard to believe, Boss dist sounds so harsh and fake, anyone have an insight view on this ?

To the OP : +1 on using free soft like Wagner, there are other free sims for less dirtier sound too

i seriously think that i get better tones out of wagner than any of the other amp sims...
