Industry Standard Guitar Simulator

Sorry for the slight OT, I saw a video where both Opeths guitarists were using a Boss GT6 or GT8, with their guitar tech telling that their distortion sound were coming from those… I find it hard to believe, Boss dist sounds so harsh and fake, anyone have an insight view on this ?

To the OP : +1 on using free soft like Wagner, there are other free sims for less dirtier sound too

Opeth use Boss GT pedals for getting their live tone. None of it relates at all to what they use in the studio.

Strictly for live playing, though, but yeah, I saw that vid too

EDIT: Whoops, should have read all the posts before poasting :D

What's the difference between Wagner Sharp and Wagner MKII? Haven't really checked out these two plugs but apparently they're made by the same guy, aren't they?

Btw no one suggested these (free) plug-ins so far so i will: http://www.simulanalog.org/ I wouldn't go so far to say that they are the best or anything but I found them quite usable.

Dunno about the differences between Wagner 0.6 and MkII, but I know I prefer II cuz there are less things to tweak :loco: And I'm happy with the tones I've gotten from it (VERRRY dark)

The JCM900 from Simulanalog is very useable, if you use the cabinet defeat impulse...effectively nulling the built in speaker emulation. Then you can load your own impulse. Juicey77 (a Soldano sim) is also quite nice. Just depends on the type of tone you're going for.

o_O Tell us more about this!

Made by Allu over at the Guitar Amp Modeling forum (thanks for doing this!!).

JCM900 Cabinet Defeat Impulse

Just load it into Voxengo Boogex (or whatever utility you use for impulses) right after the amp-sim. Then load another instance of Boogex with your favorite impulse. It makes the amp-sim very useable. If you head over to that forum and search, you'll even find cool GUI's for the amp and pedals.

i always use the either the ts or sd1 stomp box model in front of the jcm900 on the b-channel. worked fine for me so far!
that cabinet defeat impulse sounds very interesting!
also plz tell us more about that Juicey77 model. couldn't find it on the simulanalog site...

Juicy77 isn't part of simulanalog. I don't even remember where I got it. Just google for it. It should be around somewhere.

Edit: Here it is. It's made by BTE...the same people that made TS Secret (the best tube screamer sim out there...my opinion).

I know, I just don't understand why they use Boss when thay could be using far better gear- just imho of course, but I've used a GT8 and tweaked it to death, and there's no way it could sound as good as say a POD XT, let alone real tube amps/preamps

+ 1 for JUICY77 too. I did a good recording for another band with Wagner on one side, JUICY on the other - all free programs

There's still no replacing of a real amp, but Revalver Mk III is pretty good. You can also get Wagner Sharp v0.6 for free and just get some impulses for it (free too) and you're set for free.

What are Impulses and where do I get them?
