There has been some discussion recently about bands being "imitators" rather than "innovators". (Iced Earth, Sinergy etc).

What bands out there are truly innovative at the moment. Who are doing things that have never been done before? Metal/non-metal categories apply.

Fantomas!
100% original - even though not one song on 'Directors Cut' is original. :err:

Well, you will have to define innovative for me, do you mean a part of their sound is innovative or the group as a whole?

Phlogiston, I do hear what you're saying though. There are not many bands breaking new ground these days. But there are a number of new bands releasing great stuff, even if it's not exactly groundbreaking.
Such as Nevermore's Dead Heart In A Dead World
or
Opeth's Blackwater Park.
or
Motorhead's We Are Motorhead ;)

Or Iron Maidens Brave New World
Or Halfords Halford (ha, thats so funny.....sorta)

I dont care about innovation I just care whether its good (I think we had this discussion eons ago didnt we?)

Dream Theater are pretty innovative, they continually push the envelope. Korn is innovative (whether you like them or not) Fear Factory is also.........erm thats all I can think of.

Yeah I know, that was my point! It still rocks even though its not groundbreaking! :D

It wasnt a world either...talk about false advertising!

I'm with Spawn, I don't care how innovative a band are, as long as they rock! :)

I don't like really generic bands though, most power metal shits me, but then again that more for its lack of attitude and balls than the fact that all the bands sound the same. I do like a band to have a distinctive sound, but it doesn't matter if they're innovative or imitative.

Personally what I think metal lacks now is the fun, energy and attitude of 80s metal... technically its great, but it doesn't have the same spirit. Watch the video for Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock and you'll see what I mean :) That's what needs to be recaptured!

"What do you want to do with your life?"
"I wanna rock!"
"ROCK!!!!" *Twisted Sister appear*

Hahaha classic!!!

Trooper - The whole fun thing is why Kiss have lasted so well, Kiss = party time (& good music). So many bands now-a-days go for the whole lets be arty-farty and present a dark and mysterious face.

I dont see anything wrong with a band listening to something and saying "you know that rocks, lets do something in the same spirit / style" - imitation is the best form of flattery or was that buggery.. cant remember.

Point is, how many covers do you hear that are actually good, i reckon about 50% which makes them worth while imo.

Oh well that's about it from me.. oh yeah I think the World in BNW refers to the fact that album was SOLD all around the WORLD but they didn't do a WORLD tour... just my 2 cents. still cut about that... and probably always will be. Los4words has pms today... grrr... ;)

 PMS??? Spawny marks down the date for future reference :D

Its like Angus Young said in an interview I saw recently: "Rock n roll is what people get their rocks off on, so we thought we'd just play a bit of rock n roll".

Keep it simple and make it rock! That's all you need heh :)

I'm gonna start a band and be the biggest metal band ever! Hahahaha!
