Interpol Thread

I'd like them more if they didn't sound like a cheap smoothie created from Joy Division and The Chameleons. Also, I find most of their lyrics stupid and cringe-worthy.

I understand where you come from on the lyrics, though I love the lyrics myself, but you are kind of making such a cheap attempt to associate them with those bands. Yeah, there is a similarity, but is it really that obvious or just a direct ripoff? I think not. I don't think that anything off of Antics is remotely close to Joy Division, while Turn On The Bright Lights had a few songs close to their sound, but nothing that would make me say they ripped them off or copied them. If anything, Interpol sounds much more smooth, with the utmost respect for Joy Division and I don't mean smooth is better, whereas Joy Division sounds more raw and stripped-down. Joy Division has a much more paced sound and decaying, while Interpol always has a moving sound and groove like.

I have not heard a massive amount of The Chameleons yet and I will soon, but from what I heard there was, again, only a slight similarity.

If you could maybe post a few videos of all three bands songs and try to compare them out than maybe I will be able to see why you keep making this claim.

Also, let us ignore Our Love To Admire. It's terrible.

Lol, it's not a ripoff at all, they're being ridiculous. Just because a band takes influence from other bands, it doesn't mean they're ripping them off, I mean it's not like they directly stole riffs or anything.
I get a really different vibe from Interpol than I do from Joy Division...the latter are depressingly beautiful, while the former are very subtly depressing. I know it's a weird way to describe music, but the gloomy, droney sound Joy Division have just fits that description perfectly to me.
Also, I love Interpol lyrics, mainly on Turn on the Bright Lights...the others not as much.

they're ok, decent really, probably the best of the post-punk revival or whatever you want to call it, but still a bit watered down and unsurprising. debut's very much a 3/5 album. i don't think they *rip off* joy division but i do think they'd probably be better if they did.

I tend to think the lyrics are rather good, at least on TotBL. Oh well.

Anyways, I wouldn't say they're a huge step down from a band like The Chameleons, whose lyrics I generally like as well.
