Rather than threadjack the Fifth Angel discussion, I figured I start a new thread. In that thread, Cheiron stated the following...

Here's my 'rule'. If you'd rather go to see the lead singer with a bunch of guest musicians, than the musicians with a guest singer, than the singer is most important and thus has to be a part of the band for it to be a band.

So... which singers/bands fit this rule for you?

Akerfeldt/Opeth
Wilson/Porcupine Tree
Gildenlow/Pain of Salvation
Jorn/any of the bands he has been in except ARK :)

I can already see a trend. It has something to do with who is the principal song writer - especially if they play an instrument as well. Finding someone who is just a voice in the band would be more difficult I think because then there is more separation from the idea that the specific individual "is" the band by being a driving force in the band.

Mathias Blad - Falconer
Though I'm probably the only Falconer fan who actually liked Kristoffer's vocals. I'm pretty sad that he's not in any bands, currently.

I really have a hard time listening to Nightwish with Anette, too. I can do it, but for me it's really not the same band. The differences in the two vocalists' styles are very dramatic, and because of that, the change in vocalist has contributed to a change in the overall sound.

Dave DeFeis/Virgin Steele
Bruce Dickinson/Iron Maiden (I have never seen them and have no interest in seeing them if Bruce isn't a part of it).
Daniel Estrin/Voyager

What I find interesting is what bands this didn't apply to for me. I was willing to see Kamelot (well tickets already bought, not sure if I would have bought them for a show on their own) and Nightwish. Black Sabbath, as much as Ozzy is connected to the sound, maybe was one that did it by putting out such great albums with Dio that it created a new image for the band.

Some of my thinking is that if the singer is also a big part of the writing, than he becomes even more important.

I think he was great. I really enjoy the album. Kind of like how I enjoy the Elvenking album with their other singer. With the Falconer one, I didn't know them well enough when I first listened to that album, and I think its partly that it has some really great songs on it, but also Kristoffer does a good job.

Funny....most of the guys mentioned so far are not just the singer, but the driving force of the band (Englund, Mustaine). I could add Coverdale with Whitesnake....again, though, he IS Whitesnake. It's difficult....ultimately, any singer can be replaced, no matter how good they are or how important they are to the band. Dio was replaced in Rainbow, Roth was replaced in Van Halen, Tarja was replaced in Nightwish....all of these were probably thought of as impossibilities at the time, but ended up being successful.

That does help. If you weren't already a fan of the band, and emotionally invested in Mathias, it's easier to appreciate Kristoffer's vocals. The guy is really very good, IMO. I really hope he joins another band some time soon.

Sebastian Bach! (and I did go see him when he played here. I don't know if Skid Row ever plays around here, but I'd probably skip it if they did)

Daniel Heiman - Lost Horizon. Completely and utterly irreplaceable as Wojtek has found out.

second the Defeis - Virgin Steele pick. VS cannot exist without him.
Eric Adams - Manowar. If Eric leaves Manowar dies.
Rock n Rolf - Running Wild. Ok the band is gone but RW can only have Rolf singing of course.
Peavy - Rage. nuff said!
King Diamond - King Diamond..this is getting silly!
Nils K Rue - Pagans Mind
Tarja - Nghtwish. Yes!
Fabio - Rhapsody
Boltendahl - Grave Digger. I don't like his vocals but he belongs in GD.

Second the Daniel Heiman

Andy Kuntz - Vanden Plas
Lars - Manticora
Mickael Erikson - Circus Maximus
John West - Royal Hunt
Nils Rue - Pagan's Mind

You either meant Brainstorm or a different Andy for that first one!

Setting aside bands where the vocalist more or less "owns" the band (i.e. Coverdale, Akerfeldt), I'd go with:

Iron Maiden/Bruce Dickinson
Leatherwolf/Michael Oliveri - as enjoyable as that Leatherwade performance was, it didn't seem like the real Leatherwolf to me.
Pretty Maids/Ronnie Atkins
Saxon/Biff Byford
Gotthard/Steve Lee (RIP)
Vanishing Point/Silvio Massaro
Dark Tranquillity/Michael Stanne

Wow, tough topic.

When I was a teenager, I used to think the vocalist was the band. I've long since grown past that, and after Maiden, no vocalist is too big to be replaced. Now, that one failed miserably, but usually a band can go on. To me, then, it's the vocalists that have a unique sound that belong to this category. Not all the singers here are the original members, but they are to me the most identifiable with the band. (I would have put Hansi and Blind Guardian here, but I've heard Jens Carlsson of Savage Circus and realize that BG would be fine).

WASP - Blackie Lawless
Falconer - Mathias Blad
Testament - Chuck Billy
Circus Maximus - Michael Erikson
Queensryche - Pre-leather-speedo Geoff Tate (they're not even the same band now)
Manowar - Eric Adams
Kamelot - Roy Kahn (just cause I like stirring up cross-thread trouble) :)

Steve in Philly

No, you're not. Grime Vs. Grandeur is probably my fave Falconer disc. Kristoffer did a fine job on vox as far as I'm concerned, even though he's not as "unique" as Blad.
