Is Hellhammer an over-rated drummer?

The only good album he ever played on was "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas".
shut up you cockmuncher, no one cares about your pitiful attempts to be opinionated.

I would say yes, he probably IS overrated, but he's also an extremely good drummer and has showed his versatility in many different metal styles.

I think he's highly overrated. I've also heard he triggers everything.( not just kicks but snare,etc...)

He would be listenable with a good drum sound imo. I'm not into the type writer clicky/ plastic sound. I like when drums sound like drums. Sometimes I can deal with fake sounding drums but hellhammer takes it to far.

Can't decide who leans on their triggers more, Hellhammer or Nick Barker.
He is over hyped, but not quite overrated. He actually comes up with some interesting rhythmic patterns.

I think hes more overrated for his status, being one of the earlier drummers in black metal, than his skills. To me most of his work is quite standard (compared to modern black metal), but at the time when it was first introduced (mid 80s), it must have been quite impressive.

The last time i heard Nick Barker, i think it was just the bass drums that were triggered. And Hellhammer does trigger a lot, it sounds so wierd live.

youre crazy.

while i love blast beats, he has proven that he can do more than blasturbate, and do it well.

Thats the point! Overhypted means not overrated! He plays since about 17 years, also he is involved in a jazz band. Every musician will tell you that this is the highest level of playing drums.
If you like him or not, he is a good drummer.

I don't think he's especially overrated. Very few people mention him in the best drummer thread. Trym is probably a bit overrated. Horgh is underrated. He's the best drummer to come out of the scene that I've heard so far.

AMEN!!!! I can't STAND that typewriter drum sound. Bass drums should sound like: "Thumpada-thumpada-thumpada", NOT "tickita-tickita-tickita", if you know what I mean.

That is one of the main reasons why I do not like a lot of big-production, more "polished" black metal.

Mike.

There are MANY better drummers, but he was a pioneer.

What's the problem with triggering? you want to go that fast, it's very difficult to get a clear sound out of as bass drum. Personally, I have no problem with triggers, I don't think it takes away from the skill of the player. you're still playing the beat, it's not being done for you. I personally, wouldn't trigger a snare, but hey. Thomas Haake has done and no one is going to tell me because he triggers his snare on some albums, that he's not a mind bendingly good drummer?

Trym has good stamina. I havent been that impressed with Horghs work in Immortal, but i dont know about Hypocrisy.
I really liked Horghs drum sound in SoND though, really natural.

There are lot of much better drummers in Jazz (Hellhammer has also jazz style of drumming but it´s not jazz) for exmple, but in metal he´s one of the best ones. He´s not overrated.

Demonium: In hypocrisy Goght plays shit (saw the recently). Horg is verry good but it´s all about speed.

I think Horgh has the most innovative fills. Look at Withstand the Fall of Time, or Sons of Northern Darkness. Trym and Hellhammer to very standard rolls across the toms most of the time. Trym is probably the best blaster. Hellhammer is a bit sloppy on DMDS. That was a long time ago though. The only more recent stuff I've heard from him is a Troll song or two.

Hellhammer is one of metal's best. Extremely versatile and comes up with great rhythmic patterns.

I guess I haven't heard the albums where he uses too many triggers, cause from what I have heard I love the drum sound he is able to get.
