I think "african american" came about because you already had "irish american" and "italian american", and so on. Each new group will continue to represent an "xxx american" forever and ever.

The only folks who call themselves "american" are those who have no ties, or can't seem to tie themselves back to the original country I suppose?

Most of my in-laws don't even include the "american" part, they simply refer to themselves as "irish".

meh, if you're born in this country, you're american. i don't care if 5 generations ago you had something born in France or whatever. the only thing french about you is perhaps a last name. of course, black people have the skin color.

I don't think many Americans are too fussed about the whole "being proud to be an American" crap anymore -- no other country obsesses over wearing its patriotism on its sleeve like the US

These days, 50% of Americans don't even want to be associated with the country so they're probably looking for an escape clause
