these are hardly new bands and most are past their prime
in flames - used to be my favorite band. while i didn't hate RTR, and i have no problems with their new "nu metal" influences, it just wasn't that great. a decent album at best. i don't expect originality from this band anymore. just give us a solid album again. everything before colony was great, clayman was pretty good, RTR is just ok.
opeth - one of the few metal bands that still has my interest. damnation is just great. deliverance was a bit of a disappointment but still had some brilliant moments
dream theater - scenes from a memory total blew me away, and still does almost every time i listen to it. but 6 degrees was pretty crappy. way too long and not very many new ideas. and the few fresh things weren't done as wall as on scenes.
symphony x - love these guys but just can't enjoy much of the new stuff. i just think they could be doing better things with the talent in the band. russel is god. romeo is god(check him out live!!!). still think twilight is their best(yes, better than divine wings imo)
nevermore - waiting to hear the new album. dreaming neon black was a music masterpiece. it went beyond metal. dead heart was a great metal album but didn't come close to neon black
testament - it's just thrash metal. it's great to get the adrenaline flowing but musically it doesn't add up to much
nightwish - ocean born was great. but the albums kept on coming and it turned into beating a dead horse.
not gonna comment on the other bands due to partial ignorance. but the point is metal is boring these days. how many dream theater clones do we need? how many "melodic death metal"(eucharist is really the only band worthy of this label) bands do we need? i'm not even gonna touch power metal(come on, rhapsody was fun for a while, but it turned into a joke)
