Yeah, I think a lot of the people on this here forum were slagging the new Arcturus so my argument there is bunk. :loco:

I think it's a 7/10, it's one of those nothing here is really terrible (though I can't get into a few of the songs, and nondescriptness is a mortal sin for a band like Arcturus...) but nothing lives up to their previous material either...I do enjoy Hibernation, tracks 3-5, and the closer.

. . . is quickly becoming one of my favorite 2004 CDs. Its also probably my second or third favorite Enslaved by now.

Another thought . . . Neurosis' 'The Eye of Every Storm' is also finally catching up with me in a big way. Its probably my third favorite Neurosis by now.

Still going . . . Pelican 'The Fire in . . .' is simply amazing. It keeps getting better for me. I don't know if I could put an instrumental album as Album of the Year, but it will get serious consideration.

My last thought . . . has anybody else heard the new Swarm of the Lotus. I'm getting tired of recommending it. BRILLIANT!

Absolutely agree with "ISA" & "The Eye of Every Storm" being phenomenal albums; the later being my favorite release of 2004 and my second favorite Neurosis release.

As for Pelican, I really can't get into that band.

Last Neurosis is good. However , And Shall the Sky Descend by Dirge (2004 also) or Cult of Luna's Salvation to a lesser extent , are much more memorable.

what? :err:
Come on, how can you compare Neurosis to Cult of Luna and, even worse, putting the later above the former? Neurosis is a genuine experimental metal band and Cult of Luna, a second-hand product, albeit a good one.

I'm sorry Isa, I've been slagging you for a while ....

after saying today how it never did much for me, I gave it another spin, and it finally clicked

To me Neurosis set the bases but never released a total masterpiece , so in the end , while I own the last 6 Neurosis albums which I enjoy very much , they're not great in my book.

To me Neurosis peak at "Times of Grace", while I'm still more fond of "Souls at Zero".
So yes, "Salvation" > "The Eye of Every Storm", even if the latter is and will remain a big big number. You can't always bring forth band status over album quality.

"Through Silver in Blood" is the one which is nearer to masterpiece status for me . Purify , Aeon , the title track and Strength of Fates :worship:

Times of Grace is a bonafide masterpiece. And far better than anything Isis or CoL have released or have ever even fathomed releasing. The evidence is crystal clear.

"Panopticon" is in the way, but for Cult of Luna, of course "Times of Grace" is xxx times better!
