Some of you on Facebook might know about my battle with raccoons that inhabited and crapped all over & destroyed my attic. Pix aplenty! Well, last night, the Raccoon scat party took place with my trapper, a home remodeler, and an insurance adjuster. To say I was apprehensive would be an understatement. I was 0 for 2 with home claims getting settled (a microburst that took out my shed, and damaged my fence, as well as 25 minutes of golfball sized hail in seperate incidents) I knew this one was going to be a big deal, but not as big as it seems to have ended up.

The contractor dude was ready to puke after about 4 minutes up in the attic. Good thing it wasn't hot out, as being up there when its warm is like drinking a glass of sand, as you feel your throat close up, and you get a bad dry cough. He said there was no way to "spot" clean this. What they found was worse than I suspected. There is literally crap from one corner to the next, and all points in between. There are pee spots that have soaked into my plaster (NEVER buy a home with plaster walls & ceilings!!) and crap under, around, and rolled into the insulation. There are chewed wires, damaged ductwork, and probably more stuff they will find as they begin to repair this.

The insurance adjuster gave me no hassles on getting this stuff fixed (so far) It will be about a week long job that will involve spraying bleach, or another insecticide to kill fleas on the surface, and mold that was growing out of the turds like hair. The insulation will be removed & bagged, and then disposed of, all through the tiny access hatch that I barely fit through. Then, all the bare wood will receive a second clean/disinfect treatment before damage is repaired, and new insulation is installed. All totalled, the repairs are going to be between $4500-$5000. I will be out of the house during the bleaching treatments, and forced to board my cats, and live in a hotel for a few days. I've been told that my attic may be the new poster child for raccoon damage. Yay me! :zombie: I'm just happy that for ONCE, it appears that I will not be getting screwed by an insurance company.

Raccoons suck, it's no wonder Uncle Nugent shoots them when he sees them. If Rocky & family come back, he will be shot on sight...
Filled a couple clips for the Ruger 10/22 with Omark/CCI Stingers. I still wish I would have caught one of them in the bucket trap... :heh:

That's the problem when critters are given opposable thumbs. Though if cats ever get opposable thumbs, we're all doomed.

Can't say we've had raccoon problems here. I guess living out in the country, they have plenty of places to go other than my parents' house.

Wow! I saw the pictures, but, well, just... wow! Glad the insurance company is not screwing you. I think my probable squirrel in the wall that I apparently lured out may have been replaced by squirrels in the attic space. The good thing is, it's a condo and not my responsibility to fix. The bad thing is, there is no access to the attic space. All they're doing is setting out rat "boxes," whatever those are. Hope it works. The pitter patter of little feet running across the roof/ceiling is NOT my idea of a good time.

Holy crap! (no pun intended) That is WAY worse than it originally seemed. Good luck to you with the clean up and insurance company. Hopefully, it will go smoothly for once.

My ancient, yet still aggressively competent "mouser" of a cat has kept my place vermin free for years. God bless his murderous little heart.

Thanks Shaye! Squirrels are pretty easy to catch, and if you (or the assoc.) take them 6 miles away & release them, they usually don't come back. I caught 2 squirrells in the raccoon traps the trapper used here. We're still trying to figure out why they were lured by the rancid bait....

Thanks Ann! Should know something by tomorrow when I get the live estimate. It's going to be one helluva job...

Glad to see that you're finally catching a break for a change, my friend. Hope the raccoon eviction and attic & roof repairs will go quickly and smoothly for you, & that Rhapsody & Dweezil won't hate you TOO much for the boarding thing when all's said and done.

How the heck did your insurance company weasel out of a microburst, or hail damage?

/me flees to check his own policy

Microburst - Fence & shed OBVIOUSLY not anchored properly. Perhaps if a TREE hit it, it would have been covered....

Hail - Damage does not affect functionality. Funny how my west facing windows in my house STILL leak in bad storms. They didn't before the hail.

Bad scene all around, cashing in on this one, hopefully...

I'm glad you are getting a break with the insurance co on this. I can't imagine it, seeing the photos were bad enough! And I thought for sure they would have been lured into the traps with my Mickey D's recommendation. They prolly sat in neighboring trees watching you rig the trap (ha ha)!

I have this crazy image of you shaving the hair off the turds and it makes me just nauseous. OMG!

~Jen

It comes off pretty easy with one of those micro nose hair trimmers! :Puke:
I'll be sporting a coonturd mold soul patch in Atlanta next year! :heh:

Jeeze Jen, I'm weird, but I'm not THAT weird.......:Saint::lol:

Orbsicle: I think it's going to be ok, the adjuster was afraid of crawling around in the crap with the three of us. We made sure we showed him EVERYTHING (& took lots of pictures that make the FB stuff look tame!)

Babs: I SO wanted to get one in the bucket trap...just to send a message

You crack me up!

~Jen

:muahaha:
(I think that's a good name for a band...it's no Teabag Parfait, however..)

Jen and Dubby-kins, you've both disturbed me greatly. :P

^5's Jen - Mission accomplished! :D

i saw some raccoons on my walk home last night.

Glad it wasn't in front of MY house.

Were they "just waitin' for the bus all day?"
Shoot the bastards! They'd be sizing up your place for an invasion. All it took was one knot hole in a piece of roofing plywood for me...

Where I am living right now, there are raccoons and foxes all over the place at night. They can get pretty annoying, but I've never actually had one come in here thankfully. I'd never kill one though unless it was rabid. Hope you get everything taken care of man. Your post reminded me of this video:
