Anyone here clued up about their jazz? I've liked most of what I've heard but it's mostly been snippets, odds & sods and I've got no idea where to start proper :erk: essential artist/albums/songs? (esp. songs so I can download :Saint: )

I have an extensive jazz collection, and I can give you all sorts of receommendations. Just let me know what you like. Most of my jazz is focused in the "jazz guitarist/composer" field and the "experimental/free-form" field.

One jazz musician can be heard playing a HUGE variety of styles from one release to another. They also tend to collaborate with each other more than hip hop artists.

My favorite jazz artists are:

Pat Metheny
Bill Frisell
Al Di Meola
Miles Davis

Go to www.patmethenygroup.com and you can find some samples of his stuff. I would say Pat Metheny is sort of the "Ulver" of jazz. He has covered a VERY broad range of styles, yet he always sounds like himself.

www.billfrisell.com should also have some good samples for you. Bill Frisell is sort of like The Greatful Dead meets Neurosis . . . playing jazz/blue grass stuff. His guitar style is WAY more original than any metal guitarist could ever dream of being. After listening to several of his albums you would understand.

I can give full album recommendations on any of these. Just let me know.

I'll get onto those pages tomorrow (is getting late now), cheers boss.

My experience thusfar is limited to Cream, the Cowboy Bebop theme tune, Les Binks hitting the toms in Judas Priest, mishing down to the local jazz club last summer, odds and sods :erk: fuck, that's no good!

Anything hard and heavy that is jazz would be good! :D

If you like hard and heavy I suggest groups like Last Exit or Naked City. They're really more frantic than heavy but both bands are amazing.

Bill Frisell played in Naked City. He is absolutely fantastic. A lot of his solo work is more Americana-based and often kind of melancholy. He's got many many albums and they're often quite different so you'll have to do some research. His music is well worth the effort.

Miles Davis' electric albums are great but a lot of jazz purists can't stand it. If you like Hendrix you'll probably like a lot of Miles' 1970's music which can be a bit more chaotic.

If you want some hard-n-heavy 'classic' jazz I suggest looking into John Coltrane or Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.

As far as downloads, can't help there. Sorry.

Bitches Brew is four CDs, is this serious?! Man, this is gonna take forever to sort through on SoulSeek :loco: I'm looking into these recommendations, don't worry...

The four CD set of Bitches Brew is 'the complete sessions'

Back then it was very forward-thinking to play a lot of music and then just put parts of different takes together, making something completely new. This was way before samplers. I believe the first disc is more or less the original release. I could be wrong.

Miles Davis' Bitches Brew
John Coltrane
Duke Ellington
Herbie Hancock
Thelonius Monk
Sonny Rollins (my father has an old album of his that kicks ASS)
Cannonball Adderly ( ft. Miles Davis)

PS - jazz musicians are INSANE. Especially drummers and bass players.

Jazz is the only other genre of music (other than metal) where musicians constantly push the boundaries.

Get some Bill Frisell. I really like the style of music he has done on albums like 'Gone . . . Just Like A Train' and even 'Nashville'.

Yes, I'm pursuing Jazz guitar in University, and my personal favourite at the moment would have to be. ORNETTE COLEMAN. He is Free Jazz, I personally recommend Science Fiction, a really beautiful album.

Also, check out Bad Plus they are a great new fresh soudning jazz band that do wicked covers and have a nice groove, the bassists Reid Anderson's solo work is also excellent. and Billie Holiday cheers me up when I've got the ol' Blues.

Oh and needless to say all the mentioned above are excellent.

I don't know a lot about jazz, but enjoy it as a casual fan. The only artist I have several albums by is John Coltrane. I'd recommend Blue Train or Giant Steps.

Hmmm...so far Bitches Brew is quite chilled, casual, aimless...I now know why they say "once is a mistake, twice is jazz" :loco:

I'll get onto as many recommendations as I can (i.e.e have patience for). PLEASE, some stuff I can headbang to! :D
