How long have you had your duck shooting licence Terry and how many times can you honestly say you have killed the animal your allowed to kill with one bullet.
I doubt that anyone other than the legendary "Doc Carver" ever shot at birds using "bullets". Lionel Bibby used to shoot coins and stuff with a .22.

But nobody shoots birds using bullets.

I don't shoot ducks, but grew up eating ducks shot by my father and uncles.

To get a licence, they had to do a duck identification course, plus have an appropriate firearm and licence, and that was about it. There wre bag limits, which were checked by wildlife officers.

Yep, there WERE a bunch of cowboys who shot anything about 20 years ago, but they were usually the same sorts of people who were feeding the carp to help them to grow.

Nowadays, if I CLEAN my rifle with a beer in my hand, I can be charged with control of a firearm under the influence. $10k fine for that one. So I don't think there are many drunken rednecks with guns (legally) in the state.

Duck hunting has been illegal in NSW for ages. It's been so susccessful, that they've had to pass legislation allowing farmers to cull them......they can become a plague in their own right. The farmer gets a licence, then has to pay people to cull them (or do it himself).

With the advent of lead free shot, there's not the toxicity problem with the sludge at the bottoms of dams anymore.

Banning duck hunting is bullshit. Appropriate controls, and quotas, just the same as for the fishing industry (although with the fishing industry, there's the business aspect that always overquotas).

Sustainable utilisation is the game.

And anyone who eats meat and looks down on hunters who take their own meat is a hypocrite.

Back on topic now.

The way I see politics now in Oz is that we keep having to vote the arseholes out until they do the right thing, and actually REPRESENT US, not some party ideology.

Actually, to be in a party, I think that you should be tried for conspiracy.

Anyway, A long time ago, I voted labour. Then I helped to vote Howard in, as Keating was a pig ignorant arsehole, who left me with an $8k bill for going to university.

And now I'm back trying to vote Howard out.....actually, we've got a pretty good independent in this electorate (Peter Andren) who has kept the pricks on their toes for a few years.

Yep, I'll give Latham my support this time, because we need a change. And if he doesn't perform, I'll vote against him too.

Similarly with Bob Carr.....him and his treasurer have been here far too long.

Im not a hypocrite. I eat meat all the time, but I dont go out and kill it when its available in shops. Why kill more than we have to? You want duck, go buy it, if you want meat, go buy that, simple!

If you want to shoot things, go find some CLAY targets to shoot. Culling is one thing, just shooting stuff for fun is another thing altogether.

Dont get me wrong, im not a tree hugging animal lover, I cant stand PETA and those wanker animal liberationists, and if the world went to hell and we all had to revert to living like cavemen, id be the first to bring down a Bison with my bare hands for dinner, but we are living in a SOCIETY here people, why kill more than you have to when you can get it at the shops?

Why sohouldn't you shoot animals that you want to eat.

Look at the odds of a battery hen living a good life and dying of natural causes, versus a duck which has shitcans more chance of not beaing eaten by a human than being eaten by a human.

Get on discovery, and try to find the story on farmed ducks in China.

And I never kill more than I have to. I eat every animal I shoot. How many bits of animal are thrown out by Coles every night ?

BTW, I haven't shot an animal for 5 years.

Why shoot the animals that you want to eat when you can ALREADY get them at the store?

Why have industry breed them in cramped, crap conditions, feed them shit, never have them see the light of day, kill them in equally inhumane ways, then throw 30% of them out, because they are past their "use-by" date ?

If there's such a thing as reincarnation, I'd much rather come back as a duck, and take my chances with hunters than come back as a chicken.

So are you happy, having some-one else doing the dirty work (i.e. killing) for you ?

Firstly, they are killed VERY humanely, a spike to the head, instant death. Secondly, they use just about every piece of a cow, including the offal, skin and meat. There is VERY little wastage.

Secondly, yes im very happy having someone do the killing for me because its not the dark ages anymore. If it was, id have no problem killing them myself to find something to eat, but seeing as I can just pop down the shops to get some now, ill go with that rather than kill MORE than we need to. They are bred for that purpose, are the ducks bred for it? NO.

Animals are yummy. However, I'm also pretty confident we'd have a whole heap more vegetarians if people had to kill their own food. I'd be one, for instance. I'm a big softie.

I'm not sure where I stand on this one. I don't like duck hunting for all of the reasons other people have said. I also don't particularly like duck meat, but that's another story. I do, however, like chicken. I don't like how they're kept and raised though, and that often guilts me out. I've seen it. I didn't like it. I'd rather chickens were kept like ducks.

I always buy free-range, RSPCA approved eggs. :) They're a little bit more expensive, but I feel less guilt about it.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I was brough up as a kid eating rabbits. And at about age 4, I started to think about the fact that I ate rabbits, my mate had pet rabbits, and I had pet dogs.

Eating meat is a decision that no-one should make based on trays of meat in Coles.

*reps* that's a choice that I make also.

(I didn't ignore the rest of your post, as we just ate a chicken this evening, which was raised in appalling conditions)

I'd much rather by a duck from a store that was killed by neck snapping or something, then shoot a duck and spend 4 hours picking the buckshot out of it.

Koichi,
if the ducks that you shoot are the size of a deer, thus requiring buckshot, then I'd suggest that you go for the flying pigs. (with a correspondingly smaller shot size)

Tez mate, I like you, but ya reallly don't have to go on abusing guys because youlike shooting shit up, thats your deal not theirs, cop it sweet and walk off.

And as for Government you'd be a fucking clown to vote Libs, all they have ever done is fuck this country, in my last 24 years of excistance at least, Labour is the go always for workers, they do genuinly try and help. Hell look at Medicare, cockhead libs wanna get rid of it, so I can't afford to take my kids to the doctor's that sucks man, what do I do when my kids get sick then...FUCK OFF HOWARD!
