I thought I would do something a bit different and dedicate a specific thread to each band and sticky it for a bit. This will give those that are unfamilar with the band a chance to read other's thoughts, ask questions, etc. instead of digging through a huge amount of threads at the moment.

The setlist from their recent PP Europe gig was buried already on page 4:

Warriors
Sirens
Maniacal Renderings
The Evil Beside You
Streets
Jesus Saves
Tonight He Grins Again
Ghost In The Ruins
Agony And Ecstacy
Believe
Chance
Hounds
Timeless Flight
Through The Eyes Of The King
Edge Of Thorns
Gutter Ballet
Hall Of The Mountain King

On this board a few years ago, I wrote that, with all the various Savatage spin-offs, Glenn could have a different band play every year, and I'd be happy with it.

I'm biased, since Sav is my #1 favorite band, and I think Oliva is a genius. I liked JOP's first album, 'Tage Mahal, but I thought it was uneven. The latest, Maniacal Renderings, though, IS old Savatage. I highly recommend it. Jon sounded great this year at the mystery show, and I'm obviously looking forward to this one.

Anything with the Mountain King is going to be highly entertaining...and ROCK MIGHTILY!

Rock on!

Jon's acoustic performance at the pre-party (pre-pre-party?), for those who cared (and could see it), was brilliant. FAR better than I think many people were expecting. JO'sP next year should be great!

What HE said. I have said this repeatedly, but Maniacal Renderings is AS GOOD AS ANYTHING JON HAS EVER DONE, INCLUDING STREETS. If you don't have this disc, GET IT!! You can HEAR Jon's genius. You can HEAR Jon's Beatles influence. And if you can't headbang to track #5, you better check your pulse!! This is AS CLOSE TO SAVATAGE AS WE ARE EVER GONNA GIT!!!!!!!!! :heh: Criss (RIP) has writing credits on several songs and there are some of his solos on here.

I have seen JOP twice in the last year in Florida and he SLAYS. Look at that setlist above. He hit EVERY FRIGGIN' NOTE in "24 Hours Ago".

I agree with everything everyone has posted thus far...especailly about the acoustic set he performed on Wed night. The guy really is a genius...let's just hope that one of the headliners is actually Savatage and they celebrate their 25th anniversary at the greatest fest around!

Including 'Streets'. I didn't go that far! Let's just say it's damn good, and not blaspheme, okay? :heh:

I agree with you Steve. I've heard other people say something similar to the above statement and I have to disagree. Savatage's classic stuff will never be topped...and that's the bottom line. Don't get me wrong, I love JOP as well. :kickass:

it's great to see so much love being given to the two bands I look most forward to seeing next year: Astral Doors and J.O.P.

I am one of those die-hard old-school Sirens/Mtn King/Streets fans who just can't get into the Paul O'Neil driven stuff. I'm sorry, but Jon is the King of melodic power metal. And I agree that Maniacal Renderings is his best stuff since the Savatage (Oliva brothers) years. I always love seeing Jon on stage. He is a consummate showman, storyteller, and musician. J.O.P. will surely be the highlight of PPUSA IX for me.

again I must say 'Thank You Glenn'.

Well Mountain King and Streets is fairly Paul O'Neil directed stuff but all's forgiven. I know what you really mean though ;)

I love the Paul O'Neil stuff myself (you are probably referring to Edge of Thorns and after... or at least Handful of Rain and after... you are so missing out.. man so missing out..). Really melodic cool rock/metal opera.

np: Handful of Rain.... damn this reminds me a lot of Metallica/Megadeth now that I listen to it again...

I'm definitely referring to the post-Criss years, regardless who produced/directed, etc the stuff early on. I just never cared for the writing style after Criss died and Jon [mostly] stepped down as the driving force. I have/had all of their cds all the way up through the latest. But those latter years discs get far fewer spins than the earlier material.

I say tomayto, you say tomahto, it's all good.

Its understandable certainly ;)

I think that Handful of Rain is so great still due to Jon's work on it (he played bass, drums, rythm guitar, etc), and Zak did an amazing job on it if course, and well Alex is just a godly guitar player.

I'm sure you'll still enjoy hearing Chance next year hehe.

But yeah I'll always love Poets and Madmen, Wake of Magellan, and Dead Winter Dead

This is gonna probably be the highlight of next year for me (not knowing who will headline, be at the showcase, or having Volbeat blow me away). I just hope JOP will bust out an extra special setlist for this one. I love Maniacal Renderings (and Tage Majal) and hope he will throw some of that in there with some of the new stuff they are coming up with in addition to all the "must play" classics. Ohhh, this is gonna RAWK!

I guess I'm tomahto because I lean toward later Savatage. The early albums were definitely classics (grew up with and adore them all), but Dead Winter Dead and Wake of Magellan took Gutter Ballet to the next level with or without Criss. Those two, I consider albums for the ages...such brilliant songwriting and execution. Gold pedestal.

To further prove I'm a tomahto, my fave Sava album is Poets and Madmen. It's a mainstay for me. Whenever I come home from a party or the bar, and the buzz is ON, PaM is the perfect cure for the jam jones. That album is so heavy, so hooky, it's Godly.
